Grammar98 Cricket Club

Grammar98 Cricket Club (often referred to as Grammar98 or simply G98) is a recently formed cricket club based in Aberdeen, Scotland. The club competes in the Aberdeen Evening Cricket League [1], whose matches take place on Tuesday evenings at a number of locations in Aberdeen. The vast majority of Grammar98 players hail from the Aberdeen Grammar School[2], and the vast majority of those began their school careers as part of the 1998 intake of students.
The AECL is made up of 2 components. The first half of the season consists of a league format competition, which is followed by a knock-out cup competition, known as 'The Oxy Cup'. The AECL has close links to the Aberdeenshire Cricket Association [3], indeed most of the players in the AECL also play in the ACA.

The club was established in the Easter period of 2005 and became members of the AECL in the spring of that year. The club was established in order to provide an opportunity for those people who had played cricket at the Aberdeen Grammar School between 1999 and 2004 to continue doing so after they had left school. The team name represents the year the majority of team players started school.
In its maiden season of play Grammar98 finished 5th in the league, winning four and losing five of their nine games. The team scored exactly 1,000 runs and took 57 wickets. In the Oxy Cup the team reached the quarterfinal before being beaten by ATSCC.

Following on from its sub .500 season in 2005, the club improved its record but not its league position in the 2006 season. Despite winning six and losing only three matches the club finished fifth again. Performances were clearly improved, the team scored 1,111 runs, took 60 wickets and conceded less than 1,000 runs.
In the Oxy Cup, success again eluded the team as they were beaten at the quarterfinal stage by league newcomers Methlick.

In the third year of the clubs existence, they fought hard at the league title, winning their first 7 games. However defeats to Methlick, champions elect Dec Rebels and ATSSC meant the club could only manage a 4th place finish. Once again the club clocked up the runs, finishing the leagues highest scorers with 1260 runs in 10 matches.
The semi-final stage was as far as was reached in the Oxy cup, with Dec Rebels completing a second win over the club in the season. Wins over St. Ronald and Methlick had allowed the club to reach this stage.
The club did not end the season empty handed however. Joe Garner won the league batting trophy, scoring 199 runs in 8 matches, with 4 retirals and 3 not outs, at an average of 199.00.

When a player scores one hundred runs for Grammar98 in one season, they are intitled to sign the club bat. The bat was purchased on eBay by club member Andrew Russell for £20. In addition to signing the bat tradition requires the player to play his next innings with the bat.
