Građanski Zagreb
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Građanski Zagreb, with a full name Prvi Hrvatski Građanski Športski Klub (1.PHGŠK), (First Croatian Citizens' Sports Club), was established in Zagreb in 1911. It contributed to development of football in Croatia. It was especially successful between the two World Wars.
It was the champion of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia five times (1923, 1926, 1928, 1937, 1940). In 1934, Građanski hosted the Brazilian national team to a 0-0 draw.[1] The club defeated Liverpool FC during its visit to Zagreb in 1936 by a score of 5-1.[2]
After 1945 the club was disbanded and most of the players moved to Dinamo Zagreb that eventually took over the old club's dresses and similar coat of arms in 1969. Some states that many player were forced to move to Partizan Belgrade. However, at least 7 of 11 best players (Wölfl, Kokotović, Lešnik, Cimermančić, Pleše, Antolković and Jazbinšek) moved to Dinamo.
