Frank Swettenham was a colonial administrator, a position of some power and prestige. This portrait was commissioned by the Straits Association (which was taken over by the United Kingdom from the British East India Company), where he was Governor from 1901 to 1904. Painted by John Singer Sargent, 1904. It is now in the public domain since it was taken more than 50 years ago. It is sourced here
