GoldbladeGoldblade is punk rock band from Manchester UK. They formed in early 1995 when ex Membranes frontman John Robb put the band together bringing in bodybuilder and ju-jitsu champion Wayne Simmons who he trained with at his flat. The pair of them trained with weights listening to free jazz, old school punk and DC hardcore and formed the core of the band with ex Membranes guitar player and A Witness vocalist Keith Curtis on bass, Rob Haynes on drums and Jay Taylor on guitar. The band signed to Ultimate records and released their first single ‘Soul power’ to critical acclaim before releasing several more singles and three album, Home Turf’ and ‘Goldblade Drop the Bomb’ and ‘Do You believe In the power Of Rock n Roll’ before Simmons and Taylor left to be replaced by ex Nightingales guitarist Pete G.O.R.G.E.O.U.S and Johny Skullknuckles.

The current line up has recorded two albums ‘Rebel Songs’ and soon to be released definitive album ‘Mutiny’ that combines the bands punk rock swagger, hardcore intensity and anthemic songs with the writing of the situationist International, a surrealistic take on consumerism gone mad and society gone crazy, a celebration of the DIY ethic and punk rock and the generational defining power of music.

[edit] Early history

Goldblade formed in Manchester in the mid nineties playing what they called "punk rock hooligan blues". They formed in early 1995 to play flash, swaggering punk rock with an underground ethic. A cross between DC hardcore, old school late seventies punk, Wu-Tang Clan and bastard blues. Ex Membranes frontman John Robb put the band together bringing in bodybuilder and ju-jitsu champion Wayne Simmons who he trained with at his flat. The pair of them trained with weights listening to free jazz, old school punk and DC hardcore and formed the core of the band with ex Membranes guitar player and A Witness vocalist Keith Curtis on bass, Rob Haynes on drums and Jay Taylor on guitar. [edit] Home Turf

Home Turf, produced by Gavin Monaghan was an ambitious debut album that went from pop punk anthems like 'Strictly Hardcore' to some true off the wall weirdness. The confidence that comes out of the record show Goldblade's do or die attitude. The album received rave reviews and got the band an appearance on Top Of The Pops.

[edit] Gold Blade Drop The Bomb

With added brass Goldblade's second album was recorded in Brighton at The Levellers' studio and released on Ultimate Records. It became the band's second top 75 album and saw the first single 'Hairstyle' nearly have a top 40 hit with daytime radio play and an appearance on Ant and Dec's Saturday morning show "CD:UK'. The band caused a mini riot in the studio with their appearance, which created a mosh pit. They also turned down an offer from Billie Piper to buy the song for her next single. The week the single came out Ultimate went bankrupt and the single stalled outside the top 40.

[edit] Do You Believe In The Power Of Rock n Roll?

The band toured Germany readying the new songs for the album. Guitarist Jay Taylor left shortly after recording to concentrate on his own band Bone-Box. Goldblade appeared on University Challenge.

[edit] Rebel Songs

Packed full of anthems and released on Captain Oi! Records, ‘Rebel Songs’ was a big album on the punk scene right across the world. In the last 12 months Gold Blade have been at huge festivals across the planet and on tours. The band played punk festivals worldwide and became a big live draw. With new members Johnny Skullknuckles and Pete G.O.R.G.E.O.U.S. adding extra firepower the band never sounded better.

Goldblade wrote a populist album that will sit in alongside both Green Day and Rancid, they have shared the stage with Buzzcocks and The Offspring amongst many others, they have been compared to The Clash and give a nod to Crass. Goldblade were now equally at home playing in the stadiums of Russia, huge festivals in Europe and any venue in the world.

The first single, 'Psycho', was given away for free to Goldblade's fan base in 2004.

On the back of the album's success Captain Oi released 'Strictly Hardcore' , a compilation of the best bits from the band's four albums. This follows frontman John Robb's best selling book 'Punk Rock- An Oral History' - an account of the punk rock explosion.
