Goetze's Candy (pronounced gets) had its start in 1895 as the Baltimore Chewing Gum Company, which was founded by August Goetze and son, William. In 1917, a candy was developed which would ultimately evolve into their signature candy, Caramel Creams, a soft chewy candy with a cream filling in the center. Over the years, many different flavors were added, some of which have been discontinued, such as peanut butter and licorice. The company has been family owned and operated since its inception, with the fifth generation joining the company in 1992.
The company also makes different styles of candy, such as Cow Tales. These are similar to the Caramel Creams, but in the form of a long, thin cylinder of soft caramel with a vanilla creme center. Cow Tales are produced in several different flavors.
In 1984, R. Melvin Goetze, a third generation family member who joined the company in 1935, was inducted into the Candy Hall of Fame by the National Confectionery Sales Association of America. [1]. Spaulding A. Goetze Sr. was inducted into the Candy Hall of Fame in 1998.[2]
