[edit] Launch

The payload was designed to sense and monitor meteorological conditions from a geocentric orbit. Launched on May 3, 1986 at 1800 EDT; it was to replace GOES 5 and provide continuous vertical profiles of atmospheric temperature and moisture.

Delta vehicle lost 71 seconds into flight when main engine shut down prematurely. It was the first NASA launch following the Challenger disaster.
