[edit] Summary

This is a United States Supreme Court brief filed on Monday, June 4, 2007, in the matter of Good News Employee Association v. Hicks. This petition for review of First Amendment rights follows rulings by the United States District Court (CA - Northern Dist.) and the United States Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals

This case involves review of whether or not municipal employees have a right to use the terms "natural family," "marriage," or "family values" in the workplace. The City of Oakland threatened termination for the use of these words. The Petitioners claim they have a First Amendment right to use such terms, even in the public workplace.

The controlling case law on the issues is not clear cut and the petitioners claim review is needed to avoid violations of prior precedent.
