What is the purpose of the tentacles on the glass catfish? Is it for balance? One of my catfish is minus a tentacle and is having problems swimming. Am I going to lose this beautiful fish?

When a glass cat dies, it is no longer clear. Can anyone explain the chemistry/physiology behind this?
