Gitta Mallasz

Gitta Mallasz (June 21, 1907 – May 25, 1992) is today best known for her transcription of a series of extraordinary dialogues which took place with three of her close friends in Hungary during World War II. In English the book is called Talking with Angels (first published in a short edition in 1979 by Watkins). The first edition was in French, Dialogues avec l'ange, published in 1976 after an interview with Gitta was aired on Radio France on March 22, 1976, on a weekly programme hosted by Claude Mettra. The huge response to this 90-minute interview from listeners helped the book to become an overnight bestseller.
As the notes to the 1992 edition of Talking with Angels (published by Daimon Verlag) read, the dialogues in the book were transcribed from handwritten notes in Hungarian during a series of events, the dates for which are all noted. The dialogues with the angels, "channelled" by Hanna Dallos who spoke the words supposedly communicated to her, continued for seventeen months, during which time conditions in Hungary were growing more dangerous. Gitta's three friends, Lili, Hanna and Joseph, all died in Nazi concentration camps just before the end of World War II. Gitta Mallasz saved as much of the manuscripts as she could and brought them with her to France when she emigrated in 1960.
In Paris she restarted her career as a stage and graphic designer and met her husband to be, Laci Walder. With him and close friends she began translating the dialogues. In 1973 she moved to the French countryside with Laci, where they lived quietly until he died in 1982. From 1983 she began venturing elsewhere to public-speaking engagements, notably to the C.G. Jung Institute in Zürich.
Other books by Mallasz include Die Engel erlebt (the angels experienced), which stems from correspondence following her public speaking engagements; Weltenmorgen (dawning world); and Sprung ins Unbekannte (leap into the unknown).
The one-woman stage adaptation of 'Talking with Angels: the true story of Gitta Mallasz' is based on the events from her book. It was adapted and is currently being performed by Shelley Mitchell. www.talkingwithangels.com
