[edit] Work on the interpretation of the fossil history

The Timetables of Science [ed. Hellemans and Bunch, 1988] make mention of Fracastoro's work on interpreting fossils as the remains of actual organisms that as well could not have all been deposited during the Christian event of the great flood. The current history of the interpretation of fossils is not filled out to any great extent currently on the Wikipedia, and not sure how Fracastoro's contribution fits in.
