Gildan Activewear
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gildan Activewear Inc. (TSX: GIL NYSE: GIL) is a Canadian clothing company headquartered in Montreal, Quebec.
The company is the subject of criticism by the Maquila Solidarity Network, especially over recent plant closures[1].
The company manufactures clothing for a variety of purposes, notably for use as band merchandise.
Further criticism surrounds the issue of the conditions in which its garments are manufactured. Aforementioned plant closures in early 2007 have seen the outsourcing of many jobs from Canada and Mexico to areas such as Honduras, Nicaragua and Haiti - areas notorious for sweatshop and unethical labour practices.
