Gibson Jerome "Gibby" Haynes (born 1957) is an American musician, radio personality, painter and the lead singer of the group Butthole Surfers.
[edit] Early life and career
Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, he is the son of actor Jerry Haynes, best known as Dallas-based kids' TV host "Mr. Peppermint." Haynes was a star on his high school's basketball team, and he attended Trinity University to study accounting. While at Trinity, Gibby was the captain of the basketball team, president of his fraternity, and was named the Accounting Student of the Year. After graduating, he went to work as an auditor for Peat Marwick accounting firm. After a year of working in accounting, he formed the Butthole Surfers, a group who became notorious for their elaborate stage shows and pervasive, psychedelic music.
Haynes played saxophone on several albums, including Psychic... Powerless... Another Man's Sac, one of the Butthole Surfers' earlier works.
Haynes appears with Ministry (offering a memorable lead vocal on Jesus Built My Hotrod) and the 2006 Revolting Cocks CD entitled Cocked and Loaded.
Haynes has also fronted the band P with friend Johnny Depp and Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea. Gibby also did guest vocals for The Dead Milkmen and Deconstruction, Dave Navarro's short-lived post-Jane's Addiction band. His newest project is called Gibby Haynes and His Problem.
[edit] Personal life and other works
Haynes with Johnny Depp produced a mini-documentary about John Frusciante's life called Stuff. Haynes is also a late night punk rock DJ. In late 1992, Haynes appeared in GWAR's first (and most famous) long-form video, Phallus in Wonderland as director Fritz Wang. Haynes appears briefly in Jim Jarmusch's 1995 film Dead Man, which stars Johnny Depp.
He currently lives in Brooklyn, New York with his dog Donut.
