Giant Rock
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Giant Rock is a large freestanding boulder in the Mojave Desert near Landers, California that covers 5,800 square feet of ground and is 7 stories high. In ancient times it was considered sacred by the Native Americans of the Joshua Tree, California area. In the 1950s it was a gathering point for UFO believers. It was located on land leased by George Van Tassel, a purported flying-saucer contactee and organizer of the UFO conventions who built the Integratron nearby and even a small airport which he operated from 1947 to 1975. There are even caves underneath Giant Rock that were dug by Frank Critzer a friend of Van Tassel's. On February 23, 2000, Giant Rock split in two.[1] Revealing that it was made of white granite. It has been reported that this was due to people burning a wildfire directly underneath the southern most aspect of the giant rock.
