The Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien (in English: Society of Music Friends) was founded in 1812 by Joseph von Sonnleithner, general secretary of the Court Theatre, Vienna. Its official charter, drafted in 1814, states that the purpose of the Society was to promote music in all its facets. In 1869, Russian composer Anton Rubinstein was appointed as director of the concerts. His tenure was short-lived. His successor was Johannes Brahms.

The Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde is the founder of the Vienna Conservatory, and responsible for the construction of Musikverein, Vienna concert hall in 1870.

Antonin Dvorak became an honorary member in 1895.
