[edit] Which son? - Robert, John or George?
I'm guessing John Gordon, the second admiral listed, was the captain the HMS America, but not other specifics are provided in the source; the diplomat is of interest because this was a reconnaissance mission concerning the status/value of the region in the Oregon Question. So it could haev een him also; the source only says that he was the brother of the Lord Aberdeen that was then Prime Minister; so it's one of these lads.
