[edit] Ellis Island name change myth

The Ellis Island name change story is a common myth. See INS or Ancestry. Names were not changed by immigration officials but it was exceedingly common for the person (or their family) to change their names after they came. Questors 00:00, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

According to the Ellis Island tour program itself, it is not a myth. What is incorrect is that the names were likely changed at Ellis Island itself. The officials there would rely on ships' rosters, and mistakes on thise documents would be carried over. Voila, new name.--Fuhghettaboutit 12:28, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
