[edit] Dubious entries
Is a Car License plate really a geocode? There may be some geographic element — that's true in the UK, for example — but it's only an element. In a typical license plate, only a few of the characters — if any — have any geographic significance; most of them identify a vehicle. So I think this is a pretty dubious entry. — Johantheghost 14:48, 19 December 2005 (UTC)
I would also dispute:
- Airport codes
- they specify an entity rather than a location: eg. if San Diego airport moved out of the city centre, would its name/code change? I don't think so.
- UN/LOCODE
- ditto.
- ITU-T country codes
- they name a country, rather than talking about a location.
- ISO 3166
- ditto.
- MARC country codes
- ditto.
- Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS)
- again, a nomenclature rather than a specification of a location.
- ONS coding system
- same again; eg. 12UBGA means "Petersfield Ward", but how does that tell me a location?
- WMO
- on the list but has no relevance that I can see.

The new material is as follows:
A Geocode (Geospatial Entity Object Code) is representation format of a geospatial coordinate measurement used to provide a standard representation of an exact geospatial point location at, below, above the surface of the earth at a specified moment of time.
A Geocode representation format is a combination of the following geospatial attributes:
1. Geocode Format Registry Number.
2. Latitude.
3. Longitude.
4. Altitude.
5. Date.
6. Local Time.
7. Global Time in Universal Coordinated Time (UTC) format.
8. Coordinate Reference System.
(Coordinate Reference System Type Registry Number - IS0 19115, Geodetic Reference Ellipsoid
Registry Number, Geodetic Reference Datum Registry Number, Coordinate Format Registration
Number - ISO 19145).
9. Coordinate Sensor Accuracy for Latitude, Longitude and/or Altitude.
10. Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) address or Internet Protocol, Version 6 (IPv6) address in
Compressed, Uncompressed or Fully Uncompressed decimal format.
11. Other geospatial attributes.
Mandatory attributes included in the Geocode representation format are Geocode Format Registry, Latitude, and Longitude. All other attributes are voluntary.
