George M. Seignious

Lieutenant General George M. Siegnious, II, United States Army took over the reigns as President of The Citadel in August 1974. Gen Siegnious was born and raised in Orangeburg, South Carolina. After graduation from the Citadel in 1942, Gen Siegnious was commissioned as a Second Lieutenat in the infantry and served in Europe during World War II. His last assignment on active duty was as the Director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon, Washington, DC. After his distinguished military career which included being the military Advisor to the Paris Peace accords on Vietnam, Gen Siegnious returned to his alma mater as President. In 1979, President Jimmy Carter appointed him to head the Arms Control Disarmament Agency with the rank of Ambassador. He would later serve as President of the Atlantic Council policy "think tank".
