George D'Oyly Snow
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
George D’Oyly Snow (1903 - 1977) was a career school master who later served for a decade as the fifth Bishop of Whitby [1]. Educated at Winchester College and Oriel College, Oxford[2], he then became an assistant master at Eton College (towards the end of which time he was ordained)[3]. After Eton he became Chaplain of Charterhouse School, and then Headmaster of Ardingly College.
He was appointed Prebendary of Chichester Cathedral in 1959[4] before elevation to the Episcopate two years later. A tall man[5] and prolific author[6] he continued in retirement to Chair the National Society.
He was the son of First World War General Thomas D'Oyly Snow, father of Channel 4 newscaster Jon Snow, uncle of television presenter Peter Snow, and thus makes him great-uncle to television presenter Dan Snow.
