Geoff Holt, UK Artist, 1942-98 London. Holt was active artistically from 1965/85, at Notting Hill London later moving (and working) to Devon until his death.
This site is to commemorate and to promote this much underrated artist who started his professional career in Bayswater selling to tourists from the railings at Hyde Park. Thus his work spread worldwide and the hand colored print "The Hunter" discovered and restored in N.Z. is typical. His tribute website, [[1]] gives representative examples of his rare early work. All are invited to join this site and hopefully develop it, in order to learn more about this wonderful artists little known works.
The constant conflict between a classically trained artist and the demands of fashion will show. His early years in postwar London in prefabs with little or no materials held back a talent which was spotted at 13 with an entry into Camberwell School of Art. He left at 18. Holt started selling his paintings around the early 60's on Bayswater Rd. Many minor drawings and large oil paintings were produced, resulting in small exhibitions. He then spent some years at the Portobello market with beautiful hand crafted chess set reproductions. At the same time the Afro- Caribbean music scene developed and Holt designed some Bob Marley covers produced from his paintings. Denis Holt, Geoff Holt's younger brother, assisted with his work until 1980 and witnessed many fine large oil paintings and could be invaluable when seeking the provenance of his art.
"I met Geoff Holt in the early 1960's when we both worked market stalls in London. His magical paintings seemed to be of another era, even back then. At times neo- classical, yet sometimes vividly surreal and almost Disneyesqe and "in your face." I remember Geoff because of his huge talent and his amazing lack of ego about it. Back in the 1960's neither of us had much money but that never stopped us from having a great time. He is sadly missed by his friends and family" Lina Eve, Australian artist [[2]]
