『源氏物語』第３９帖「夕霧」。夕霧（光源氏の子）が、落葉宮（亡き柏木の妻）の母からの手紙を読んでいる。そこへ、その手紙を落葉宮から夕霧への恋文と誤解した雲居雁（夕霧の妻）が、嫉妬のあまり背後から忍び寄って奪い取ろうとする。
