[edit] Biography

Geno Washington & The Ram Jam Band were an exciting dynamic live act who's most exiting music was recorded live on record. Washington was a US serviceman stationed in East Anglia, who became very well known by his impromptu perforances in London's clubs. In 1965 guitar player Pete Gage needed a singer to front his new band so he asked Geno to join. When Geno was released / discharged from the US Airforce, he became the bands front man.

The Ram Jam band had a reputation as the hottest, hardest , sweatiest working soul show in the UK through an unbroken run of live performances throughout England. They were so popular with audiences that they would chant Geno ...Geno ...Geno... while the other bands were on. This became a problem and other bands did not want to go on before them.

They had two of the biggest selling UK albums of the sixties. Both of these were live albums. Their most successful album, Hand Clappin, Foot Stompin, Funky Butt Live was in the album charts for 48 weeks of the year 1966 and was only out-sold by 'The Sound of Music' and 'Bridge over Troubled Water. The other album was Hipster Flipsters And Finger Poppin' Daddies.

They had some moderate hits released on the PYE label , "Water" , "Hi Hi Hazel", "Michael The Lover", "Que Sera Sera" , "She Shot A Hole In My Soul" and a minor hit with "She Shot A Hole In My Soul".

The band's name came from the Ram Jam Inn, an old coaching inn on the A1 (Great North Road) at Stretton, near Oakham, Leicestershire.
