Gaurishankar Oza

Gaurishanka Udayshankar Oza (also known as Gaga Oza) was chief minister of Bhavnagar state during 1850 to 1879. He was very well known and well respected for his keen statesmanship. He was a brahmin from Ghogha town near Bhavnagar.

Gaga Oza became minister in the times of Vajesinhji in 1850. In April 1870, when then king Jaswantji died, prince Takhtsinhji was of 12 years old. Because of his young age, the Britishers suggested join administration of the state till he becomes of adult age. During this joint administration, Gaurishankar Oza represented the Bhavnagar state and practically ran it till 1878.

During his time, he ran the state in excellent way. The state increased the turnover from just 4 lack rupees to 40 lack rupees during this time. He retired in 1879.
