Was Gilmore shot by the firing squad or killed by the chair? This article contradicts its self, alluding to both methods!
The "chair" mentioned is the chair that Gilmore was strapped to when he was SHOT. It does not refer to the Electric Chair
!!!what tard added all the nonsense? for shame! defiline wikipedia is like raping a blind person.
Gilmore was shot by a firing squad on 17 January 1977. http://www.crimelibrary.com/notorious_murders/mass/gilmore/begin_7.html

The electric chair reference should be taken out.
Actually, the article is very clear that Gilmore was executed by a firing squad. Never mind previous comment.

The grammar in this article struck me as poor, and it is more narrative than informative. Meaningless or unnecessary phrases include:
- "Gilmore's trial was held from October 5 to October 7, 1976 which he was quickly convicted of the murder..." - perhaps during which?
- "Gilmore was shot by a firing squad on January 17, 1977 after angrily telling his lawyers to drop the appeals they had filed in defiance of his wishes. On the cold winter morning on January 17, 1977 ..." - date is repeated, on is repeated, and cold winter morning seems subjective.

I agree that repetitivness makes the article seem a little verbose.
A lot of the things in this article are in contradiction to The Executioner's Song - Gilmore's last words in the novel "Let's do this" seem more likely than "Aim small miss small" - Also, I believe Mailer says there were only 4 riflemen and specifically mentions that they were not prison guards.
Furthermore, we have talk of a song by the Adverts but no mention of Nicole Baker and their suicide pact? This article needs attention. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.224.15.12 (talk) 21:11, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
No mention of the song by the adverts?
[edit] Lynchings?
Okay, so there may not have been any lynchings as such, but what should we take from the phrase "first person LEGALLY executed in the United States after the death penalty was reinstated in 1976"?
4 blanks ?
I always thought that firing squad of 5 people justed 4 real bullets and only 1 blank ? In this article the opposite is quoted, whats the true ?
No, the article says that there were 5 shooters, 4 of which were supposed to have live rounds and 1 with a blank. But when the body was examined, 5 entry wounds were allegedly found. Maybe there were 5 live rounds, but maybe, depending on the caliber weapon used, ricochet off the chair or another hard obstacle (even bones) could be possible. There is no detail of "entry" vs. "exit" wounds found.
[edit] Triviacruft => Reactions
We all know trivia sections are discouraged, and in this particular instance, it seems really out of place, more so than normal. Any objections to just deleting the whole thing? Better yet, move some of it to a "reactions" section. StaticElectric (talk) 08:44, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
Is it me being stupid, but the reference to Houdini as the father seems wrong. Houdini died in 1926, Gilmore was born in 1940. If this is true, thats one long gestation period. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.21.119.119 (talk) 17:13, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
Ha ha! Yes, it would be a long gestation period for sure. However, the allegations of an illegitimate child fathered by Houdini referred to Gary Gilmore's FATHER being that child, not Gary (who was born in 1940). His father was easily of the correct age.
