The distinction between garden and gardening is delicate; we need to bound these carefully, so as to avoid random duplication. Main distinction is that one is a class of objects, and the other is an activity; so garden can describe gardens "statically", while gardening describes the endeavor. Many topics don't bother to divide things this finely, but the size of the topic justifies it here I think. The computer and computing articles are analogous. Stan 19:05, 5 Nov 2003 (UTC)

I'm in complete agreement, and that's exactly the intention with setting up the garden article instead of continued redirection to the gardening article. There is, however, quite a bit of deconstruction to be done from the current mish-mash of articles, so that they become coherent articles. And those are the tasks still to be done. Little by little, as time permits.  : Sfdan 20:24, 5 Nov 2003 (UTC)

I was editing at Gardening and noted there was an article Garden. Personally, I think the difference is not one worth preserving, but clearly some of you do. It would therefore be helpful for you to better define the "different" directions of the two articles more so than the current rather obvious definitions of place vs activity (I think I am more or less repeating Stan's comment above) and asking for a bit more justification. In general, combining would actually result in a far better article, with new articles split off for the different kinds of gardens. Which raises the obvious questions: should there be a roof garden and roof gardening, vegetable garden and vegetable gardening, etc. ? - Marshman 17:42, 1 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Further, the redirects could do with some cleanup. "Residential gardening" is linked here, but redirects back to the same article, "Garden". "Gardener" redirects to "gardening", not totally unexpected, but surely a couple of paragraphs can be written on the profession, there have been historical gardners and pioneering gardener, not to mention that we now have lifestyle and celebrity gardeners as well. [edit] Good job!

Just making a random comment: This article is very impressive. It's direct, to the point, clean, and pretty (definitely a plus). Good job, those of you who maintained it. Riffraffselbow 02:42, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Propose removing *Gardens in Literature* section

I propose that The Gardens in Literature section be removed and a further reading section created. Only the first listing from the previous section would be preserved. The section currently resembles a *Gardens in Pop culture* section where any work that uses the word 'garden' can get entry...it has absolutely no relevance...the 'gardens' are fiction and convey nothing useful to this article.

What do you think? Berean Hunter (talk) 11:59, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
