Gary Barton (born 27 June, 1982, Basildon, Essex, England) is the youngest Councillor on both Macclesfield Borough Council [1] and Cheshire East Council.
Gary has lived in Wilmslow, Cheshire since April 1984, having moved from Billericay, Essex. Gary attended Ashedene County Primary School, the Manchester Grammar School and the University of Manchester, where he obtained a BA (Hons) in Classics and Ancient History and a Masters Degree (MA) in Ancient World Studies. Gary has been a member of the Conservative Party and is currently a member of Tatton Conservative Association and is on both the Management and Executive Committees. Gary has two younger brothers, Paul and Antony.
Gary was elected to as one of the three Borough Councillors for the Handforth Ward of Macclesfield Borough Council, on 3 May, 2007. Gary received 1,110 votes, giving him a majority of 71 over the Handforth Rate Payer candidate, David Pincombe.[2] Gary is the first Conservative to represent Handforth on Macclesfield Borough Council in almost 30 years. Gary is currently a member of the Community Policy Development Committee and is Vice Chairman of the Performance Monitoring Committee.
On 1 May, 2008, Gary was elected as one of the three Councillors for the Wilmslow South Ward on Cheshire East Council. Gary received 2,603 votes, 22.3% of all votes cast and the highest number of any of the candidates, giving him a majority of 1,286.[3] Gary's colleagues in Wilmslow South are Wesley Fitzgerald, leader of Cheshire East Council, and Rod Menlove. All three are Conservatives.
