Garden Ridge is a U.S. retail chain based in Houston, Texas. Starting with just one store, then known as Garden Ridge Pottery, in Schertz, Texas in 1979, the chain has grown into a leader in home-decorating accessories with 39 stores in 14 midwest and southeast states. The big-box retailer sells home décor for indoors and outdoors, including everything from patio furniture and gardening items to artificial plants and picture frames, as well as furniture and party supplies. It also sells a wide selection of seasonal, holiday, and home decorating merchandise. They are also well known for their seasonal Shop-A-Thon sales, where the store is open 24 hours a day over a weekend offering deep discounts on merchandise.
The chain is privately held by Three Cities Research. Garden Ridge LLC and its subsidiaries declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2004 due to mismanagement and failed lease negotiations and underwent major reorganization closing ten stores in Texas, Georgia, Missouri, Florida, Ohio, and Tennessee, including the Airtex store in Houston, one of the original stores in the chain. The corporation emerged from Chapter 11 with renewed store leases in 2005.
Two new stores were opened in 2006 in Houston and Springdale, Ohio. Three new stores opened in the Fall of 2007: Shelby Township, Michigan; Dearborn, Michigan; and Cincinnati, Ohio. One new store opened in February of 2008 in Indianapolis, Indiana; and the store in Richmond, Virginia closed it's doors. Four new stores are scheduled for Fall of 2008: Atlanta, Georgia; Birmingham, Alabama; Omaha, Nebraska; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Ten new stores scheduled to open in 2009.
