Gantz Targets

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article refers to Gantz Targets, the main antagonists in the manga and anime series Gantz.

In Gantz, there exists a black sphere of unknown origin in a certain Tokyo apartment. This sphere, called 'Gantz' by the series' characters, transports randomly-selected individuals into the apartment upon the moment of their deaths. These individuals are given a new lease in life, but are subsequently forced into a deadly game by Gantz, one that involves numerous missions in which they hunt and kill 'aliens' for points.

An old Japanese aerobic song entitled "Brand New Day" is played by Gantz at the beginning of each mission briefing. The Gantz players are given a misleading or purposefully vague description and an image of their intended target. The sphere that is Gantz then opens, revealing futuristic weapons and strength-enhancing suits for each player. When the game starts, the players (referred to as Hunters) are teleported one-by-one to a designated location, and then allocated a limited timeframe in which they must dispatch all targets in the area.

All Gantz targets are referred to as 'aliens' though the accuracy of this claim has yet to be verified. Many live amongst the humans in Japan, using various means to hide their presence, whether it be assuming human form (i.e. Oni aliens) or disguising themselves as inanimate objects (i.e. Buddhist Temple aliens). Some, like the Ring/Ringu aliens, appear to depend solely on invisibility. At times, Gantz will even designate humans as targets. In the manga, Tae was made a target because Gantz wanted her eliminated for taking photos of the Gantz team during a mission. In the anime, Kurono was made a target for attempting to assault the entity residing within the Gantz sphere.

During more difficult missions, the Gantz targets will include 'boss' targets, specifically the leaders of the target group. These bosses are typically far more powerful and harder to kill, and as such are worth more points than their lessers. The most powerful bosses can be worth up to a hundred points, making them both feared and coveted.

Originally, the Gantz targets were completely invisible to non-players, though they could still physically interact with them. This changed during the Oni alien mission, during which both the aliens and the players became visible halfway through the mission.

[edit] Note of Translation

Please note that most descriptions of the targets (characteristics, things they like, and favorite sayings) are quoted from the descriptions Gantz used while briefing the Hunters. As such, they may appear strange to some readers as a result of the direct translation from Japanese to English.

Please note that this list is based on the manga's storyline, which does not follow the anime's plot strictly. The anime-only "Kurono Alien" mission is also listed.

[edit] The Onion Aliens

The Onion Alien (ねぎ星人 Negi-Seijin)

Characteristics:

  • Strong
  • Smelly

Things They Like:

  • Green Onions
  • Friendship

Quotes:

  • "I'll give you green onions. (ねぎあげます)"
  • "Green onions are all I need. (ねぎだけでじゅうぶんですよ!!)"

Points worth

  • Onion Alien - 1 point*
  • Onion Dad - 3 points*

The first pair of aliens the Gantz team faced was the "Negi Seijin" (Negi meaning 'Green Onion' and Seijin meaning 'Alien'). True to their titles, they are green in color and love green onions. The first Negi Seijin the Hunters face was small and child-like. The Hunters quickly disposed of the defenseless creature, only to invoke the wrath of the Negi Seijin's father, a much more violent and dangerous creature. The 'Daddy Negi Seijin' massacred most of the Hunters. Kurono eventually beat the 'Daddy Negi Seijin' down and Nishi 'sent' the creature off into the sky.

These aliens are extremely resistant to modern weapons (being shot multiple times with a handgun had no effect on the father), and their left hands conceal five long, razor-sharp claws capable of slicing cleanly through bone.

Players: Kurono, Katou, Kishimoto, Dog, Nishi, the politician, the blonde, the Yakuza members, the teacher.

Survivors: Kurono, Katou, Kishimoto, Dog, Nishi.

  • Baby Bird - 0 points*

The second mission charged the Hunters with the task of eliminating a doll-like entity called "Tanaka Seijin" (named for Seiji Tanaka, a folk singer from the 1970s whose song lyrics were often quoted by the aliens). The dolls were merely robotic shells that allowed a species of bird-like aliens to live in the human world - they were unable to breathe in our atmosphere without their doll-like suits. Initially, the aliens were not openly hostile, wandering around with numerous small, bird-like creatures. They only began attacking when one of the Hunters accidentally stepped on one of their bird companions. Their main attack was a high-pitched sonic blast, emitted from the mouths of their suits. The attack caused hemorrhaging from the eyes and ears. The aliens were also extremely fast, able to dodge attacks with ease. When their outer shells were damaged, they emerged in their bird forms to continue fighting, though they could only survive for a short period of time in Earth's atmosphere (strangely enough, the tiny birds are able to breathe without any devices). The 'boss' of the Tanaka aliens resembled a more massive specimen of the species, and depended on pipes inserted into its mouth to breathe. Despite its large size, it was just as quick and agile as its smaller kin. Kurono Kei defeated this 'boss' by breaking its gas pipes and shooting it down in midair.

Players: Kurono, Katou, Kishimoto, Dog, Nishi, Masunabu, Sadako, The old woman and her grandson, the four riders.

Survivors: Kurono, Katou, Kishimoto, Dog, Masunabu, Sadako, Tetsu.

These aliens dwelt in a Buddhist temple, disguised as a variety of statues. The first to appear were approximately fifty feet tall and relatively powerful. Nicknamed the "Rowdy Alien" and "Grumpy Alien", they were disguised as two nearly identical statues guarding the temple at the beginning of the mission. They were revealed as organic beings when one of the Gantz players viewed skeletons and organs beneath their stone-like exteriors using the X-gun. Aside from being immensely strong and durable, at least one displayed the ability to generate a powerful blast of wind that knocked the hunters back. Kurono killed one by breaking its legs and then firing at its head; another hunterother one out by sniping it from a distance.

After these two aliens were killed, a giant Buddha statue several stories in height came crashing out of a building to engage them, followed by hordes of human-sized aliens.

The giant Buddha statue was even more durable than the first two aliens. Kurono killed this one by blasting a hole into its head, then jumping in and shooting it from inside.

The smaller aliens fought using a variety of swords and polearms, with most of them being dispatched by the hunters' superior weaponry.

After killing a majority of the human-sized aliens, most of the hunters rushed into the temple building itself, to face the remaining aliens there.

The most dangerous of them was disguised as a statue of the Goddess of Mercy, Kannon. The many-armed alien wielded swords, a miniature pagoda that fired energy beams, and a vial of acid, all of which easily penetrated the hunters' suits. It was also capable of ingesting human brains and accessing their memories and language. But perhaps its most deadly weapon was a disk-shaped artifact that allowed for instant regeneration from whatever wounds the alien incurred. Aside from Kishimoto and Hijiri, most the team fell prey to this particular alien. The statue was revealed to be only an outer shell, as Kato hit it with a Y gun and succeeded in removing its 'head'. Its true form was a lizard-like creature with six arms. This was the first alien to speak coherently, asking why the hunters had attacked them, claiming they never did anything to hurt anyone. Eventually, Kato was able to defeat this creature, fatally stabbing it with one of its own swords, but at the cost of his life. Thus, everyone except Kurono was killed in this mission. The point value of the powerful Boss(es) of this level were never seen.

Players: Kurono, Katou, Kishimoto, Dog, Masunabu, Sadako, Sakuraoka, the monk, the guns fanatic, the Sniper, the street fighters, and others.

Survivors: Kurono.

[edit] The Kurono Alien (Anime Only)

In the anime series, almost all the events prior to the Shorty Aliens hunt follow the original story, but in the following mission, a group of new players is selected and their target is Kurono himself. Why Gantz wanted him dead is a question unanswered, but somehow Kurono convinced some of his opponents to trust him and stop viewing him as the enemy. One explanation is that following the previous mission, grief stricken at the loss of his comrades, Kurono fired his weapon at the bald man inside the sphere, thus angering Gantz. This may be supported by the signs Gantz causes to appear on the buildings saying things such as "He betrays his friends", "He shoots people with guns", and "He shoots guns".

Kurono Alien (玄野星人 Kurono-Seijin)

Characteristics:

  • Strong
  • Vicious

Favorite Things:

  • Big Breasts
  • Fighting

The People In this Mission Include the following (Besides Kuruno)

  • Furuta Gichi (古田義一), A bookstore Owner who believes in Diplomacy and was killed in a hit and run while chasing a thief
  • Kanda Mika (神田みか), A Fairly Impotent College student who died at the hands of her stalker
  • Nozaki Daichi (野崎大地), a Biker who was swept down a river in a storm after saving a child
  • Uehara Yoshino (上原佳乃), Kurono's Homeroom teacher who was killed by the jealous wife of her affair
  • Saito Naozumi (斉藤直純), a Paranoid Businessman who has been to the 10-story building that the mission takes place in, and commit suicide while fleeing loan sharks
  • Kajiura Ryuji (梶浦龍二), The Older of the two serial killers, who was killed by government agents
  • Muroto Hajime (室戸一), The Younger of the two serial killers who died in the same way as the other, and sings the same song as gantz does before each mission while killing his victims

To complicate matters, two serial killers among the newcomers decide to wipe out not just Kurono, but the rest of the party. One of the killers blew himself up in an attempt to take Kurono with him and the other was captured by Kurono with the Y-Gun. The other players died and whether Kurono himself survived or not is a mystery since this is the last mission shown on the anime. Contrary to the manga, in this mission, we see that the Gantz suits offer no protection from bullets at all. Following the mission, Gantz disappears from the apartment.

[edit] The Shorty Aliens

The Shorty Alien (ちび星人 Chibi-Seijin)

Characteristics:

  • Strong
  • Strong will

Favorite Things:

  • Virtually Nothing

Quotes:

  • "I can see into your heart"

Points Worth:

  • 3 points

Also known as "The Chibi Aliens". As the name suggests, they were short in height. In this mission, Kurono faced the enemies alone, since all other Hunters were killed during the previous mission. As soon as he realized that Gantz had not recruited any new members, Kurono grabbed as many guns as he could carry. These aliens were strong, fast, and possessed strong telepathic abilities. In fact, they constantly broadcast their thoughts to Kurono as a method of intimidation and distraction during combat. Most of these aliens were killed fairly easily by Kurono, who tricked them into leaping over buildings towards him and subsequently shot them down in mid-air. Only one held back and analyzed his strategy, after which it nearly killed him by engaging him in close combat. As the time limit was reached, he failed the mission and was teleported to safety, resulting in GANTZ taking away all his points.

Aside from their physical and psychic abilities, the aliens had fleshy, wing shaped membranes on their back that could wrap around them and morph into the shape of humans as a disguise. This was not revealed until after the mission.

Days later, the only surviving Shorty Alien barged into Kurono's school and massacred everyone in his class but Tae and Izumi. Luckily, Kurono had brought some of his Gantz equipment with him to the school and managed to eventually defeat the alien.

Players: Kurono.

Survivors: Kurono.

[edit] The Kappe Alien

Kappe Alien (かっぺ星人 Kappe-Seijin)

Characteristics:

  • Thickheaded
  • Sweats a lot

Likes:

  • Lizards
  • Birds

Quotes:

  • "This is my place"
  • "Don’t look down on me"
  • "If you want to leave, then leave!"

(≠ "おーらのどーごがなまっでんだ いっでみろっつの" )

Points Worth:

  • Kappe Alien - 10 points*
  • T-Rex - 3 points*
  • Reptile - 1 point*
  • Triceratops - 3 points*
  • Baby Boss - 10 points*
  • Boss - 30 points*

This arc introduces a number of new Hunters due to the killing spree Izumi goes on in Shinjuku. The Kappe alien itself actually posed little danger during the mission. Rather, the threat lay with the "pets" of the Kappe alien, which were in turn a wide variety of aliens posing as dinosaur statues in a museum. Notable among them: three Triceratops with the ability to stand upright and increase their muscle mass, several Tyrannosaurus Rex could shoot fireballs from their mouths, and numerous raptor-shaped aliens. Near the end, a massive alien resembling a Brachiosaurus appeared. It had a massive blade that projected from its skull, which it swung to cleave its opponents. The first attempts to kill it via decapitation failed, until Kei realised that its brain was located in its torso and not the head. He subsequently killed it with a shot from the X-gun. The Kappe alien itself could increase in size and strength, but was eventually beaten by Kaze and killed by Izumi.

Gantz added a special rule for Kurono during this mission (possibly for failing in the previous hunt). He would have to score at least 15 points in this round or be killed. Thus Kurono had to worry not only about his life, but also about defeating all enemies before the time limit, because if this condition was not met, he would end with zero points like in the previous mission, and had no suit when the mission started. This mission also introduced the Vampires, as they appeared near the end and killed some of the Hunters before Gantz teleported them back to the room.

Players: Kurono, old man, Izumi, Sakata, Sakurai, Daizamon, Reika, Inaba, the four rapists, and others.

Survivors: Kurono, old man, Izumi, Sakata, Sakurai, Daizamon, Reika, Inaba.

[edit] The Ring Aliens

Ring Alien (ゆびわ星人 Yubiwa-Seijin)

Characteristics:

  • Strong

Likes:

  • Horses

Dislikes:

  • Those smaller than himself

Points Worth:

  • 10 points

This mission proved how effective the Hunters had become after training as a team. The aliens themselves resembled massive warriors wearing black armor and riding giant black horses. They relied heavily on their size and giant bladed polearms. Their appearance and name suggests they are based on the Nazgûl from The Lord of the Rings.

The Ring alien mission was in fact the shortest mission in the whole series so far. The mission itself was just a setting for the "Tae" mission, since the aliens didn’t pose a real threat to the Hunters.

Players: Kurono, old man, Izumi, Sakata, Sakurai, Daizamon, Reika, Inaba, Ayaka, the four rapists

Survivors: Kurono, old man, Izumi, Sakata, Sakurai, Daizamon, Reika, Inaba, Ayaka, the four rapists.

[edit] The Tae Alien

Tae Alien (小島多恵 Kojima Tae)

Characteristics:

  • Small
  • Weak

Likes:

  • Draw Manga

Quotes:

  • "Kei-Chan (ケイちゃん)"

Points Worth:

  • 30 points

Though definitely not an alien, Tae became a Gantz target after she accidentally took pictures of the Hunters during the "Ring Alien" mission. Most of the mission involved Kurono trying to save Tae from the other players, as well as the conflict between the players on Kurono’s side and those siding with Izumi. Finally, it was Tae’s love for Kurono which made her return to the playing field just in time to be slashed down by Izumi, for whom it was just another mission and a challenge to Kurono.

The Team split into two groups during this mission, which were directly opposed to each other. Those helping Kurono to defend Tae Kojima included Reika, Suzuki (old man), Kaze, Sakata, Sakurai and a girl named Ayaka. Izumi however, counted with the help of Inaba, Ayaka's 4 rapists and Hoi-Hoi, who was just following him. The rapists sided with Izumi because he told them that if they were to fail the mission and not kill Tae, their lives would end at the hands of Gantz.

When the first real battle of the mission started, Sakata and Sakurai face off with Izumi, saying they will use their "Super-reaction" to dodge his sword. Meanwhile, Iwamoto, Mikawa and Haga surrounded Suzuki, and prepare to shoot him. Tomioka and Ayaka have a standoff, and Tomioka threatens to shoot her unless she hands over her pistol. Sakata and Sakurai indeed dodge Izumi's first strike, but their guns and powers seem to have no effect. Sakata is wounded. Iwamoto, Haga and Mikawa shot Suzuki, while he shoots Iwamoto. The liquid leaks out of the suits of Suzuki and Iwamoto, indicating that the suit can withstand a few blasts of the X-gun. Suzuki then tried to run, but gets blasted by all three of them, and his legs explode (though he survives the mission, after being mended by Kaze). They then run past him. Tomioka finally forces Ayaka into handing away her weapon, and Izumi's team as a whole moves on towards Kurono and Tae.

Iwamoto, Haga and Mikawa locate Tae, and Iwamoto almost kills her, but gets punched by Kurono, who was using a cloaking device. Because his suit is broken, he dies from the strike, while Haga and Mikawa flee in terror and Kurono and Tae embrace. They then attempt to run, only to find the two men now backed up by Izumi. Izumi tries to convince Kurono to join him, but fails. He then uses a cloaking device of his own, and the two fight each other while Haga and Mikawa stand back and watch. Reika then jumps into the fight and whisks away Tae, prior to Inaba and Tomioka arriving. The four Team Izumi members surround Kurono, while Izumi runs off after Tae and Reika. The four discover that Kurono killed Iwamoto, and attack him in rage. While they chase him on the rooftops, Reika leaves Tae in a cab, while she goes back to her house and destroys the pictures that Tae took.

The mission still doesn't end, and Kurono is cornered. Led by Inaba, the blood thirsty group prepares to finish him off, and it as at that point that Kurono pulls down the trigger after locking on to Haga, which blows off his legs and sends Tomioka and Mikawa running. Inaba, however, punches Kurono, whose suit is broken, and inflicts massive damage. Tae comes running back, just in time to be cut down by Izumi. She stumbles unto Kurono, prior to being beamed away by Gantz. In the midst of the tragedy, Tomioka proclaims that "that was hard, and that he wouldn't want to go through that again" (Apparently, he found the mission difficult due to the tenacity of Tae's defenders, and perceived the whole ordeal as a game).

Upon being teleported back to Gantz's Room, Kurono had a hallucination of him and Tae in bed. She states that it is cold, and the two wrap up in a blanket. She then thanks Kurono for protecting her, and it is here that he starts to realize it is a dream. He comes to his senses holding air in the room while everyone else leaves. He finds out that Tae can be revived, and vows to get a hundred points and revive not just Kojima, but Kato and Kishimoto as well. One speculation of why Kojima ended in the Gantz data base with out being a Gantz player is because Kurono was holding her as they where all being transported to the room or because Gantz records all the humans and since it appears that Gantz transported her body into the memory bank to erase all evidence.

Players: Kurono, old man, Izumi, Sakata, Sakurai, Daizamon, Reika, Inaba, Ayaka, the four rapists.

Survivors: Kurono, old man, Izumi, Sakata, Sakurai, Daizamon, Reika, Inaba, Ayaka, 2 of the rapists.

[edit] The Oni Aliens

Oni Alien (鬼星人 Oni-Seijin)

Characteristics:

  • Strong

Likes:

  • Women
  • Delicacies
  • Ramen

Dislikes:

  • Strong People

Quotes:

  • "Such pieces of trash (≠ ハンパねー)"

The hunt for the Oni Aliens was a major turning point in the story. For the first time in the series, the target aliens were visible to normal humans. As the hunt neared its conclusion, even the Gantz hunters themselves became visible. Also, the timer displayed by Gantz simply turned off in the middle of the mission, effectively giving the hunters unlimited time to complete it.

Like the Chibi aliens before them, the Oni aliens appeared to be completely sentient and intelligent; they acted and dressed like humans, used cell phones, and even enjoying human entertainment (one Oni alien declared that he was a big fan of Reika), suggesting that they lived among humans in human guise rather than hiding as the other previous aliens had. They were also quite aware of Hunters' existence and the weaknesses of the suits.

This time, the aliens worked together with the Vampires. Though the Vampires did not actively engage in combat, they advised the Oni and provided technology so they could detect the Hunters.

It was also the first time the aliens were waiting for the arrival of the Gantz players, and had gathered in enormous numbers in order to finish the Hunters once and for all. The average Oni alien was capable of assuming human form. Their true forms were humanoid but with long tentacles in place of arms, sword-like claws, elongated necks, and an acid spit that easily penetrated the Gantz suits' defenses. They also had short horns that made them not unlike the traditional japanese folklore depictions of Oni.

This mission had four "bosses":

  • The Fire Oni: Armed with a pyrokinetic ability, it could generate and hurl balls of fire, as well as transform its body into living flame to avoid attacks. The first boss faced a small group of hunters lead by Inaba, killing all but Inaba in a single attack. Later on, it faced Sakata and Sakurai. Sakurai died in this fight, but not before blinding and crippling the Fire Oni, allowing Sakata to destroy him.
  • The Morphing Oni: Possessed shape-shifting abilities, as well as substantial speed and agility. It appeared to be able to negate the X-guns to a limited degree - shots from the gun only caused the afflicted area to swell. However, multiple or simultaneous shots could still overcome this ability. It first appeared in front of Inaba as an almost naked Reika, coaxing him to have sex with it. The real Reika interrupted before it could kill him, causing the Oni to retreat. Later, it tried to attack Reika in Kurono’s shape, even morphing part of itself into a convincing Gantz-issued rifle, but Reika saw through the disguise and prepared an ambush with the other Hunters. After being revealed, he began killing players by entering their bodies in a small form (i.e. a large fly) and then transforming into something larger (i.e. a small elephant), exploding them from within. Kurono killed it by beheading it while in elephant shape.
  • The Earth Oni: An exceptional fighter with the ability to turn itself into a giant stone golem. He was perhaps Kaze's peer in fighting ability. The two fought under normal circumstances, enjoying their one-on-one fight. The moment Kaze began to win, the Earth Oni transformed and turned the tide until Kaze used the power in his suit and quite literally ripped the Earth Oni to pieces.
  • The Ultimate Oni: According to the Vampires, this alien was not only the strongest of the Onis, but was one of the strongest aliens ever. This was soon proved true, as the Oni's strength and speed vastly exceeded those of the hunters. In addition, the Oni could launch bursts of lightning powerful enough to penetrate the Gantz suits. Upon realizing that he would join the fight, the vampires took the Hunters' extermination to be assured and left the battlefield. Angered by the genocide of his species, the Ultimate Oni cursed the world and threatened to kill every single human. He was faced by the whole party, save for Inaba, Takeshi and Hoi-Hoi. Kaze managed to break a leg and arm before being partially dismembered by its lightning. This, as expected, had an enormous effect on his speed and made it possible for Kurono to stab him and cut off the horns emerging from his back before getting punched through a nearby building. Sakata, like Sakurai before him, used his powers to blind the Oni, but he was in turn run through by the alien. Reika, shocked by everyone's apparent death, froze up and did nothing to prevent the alien (though blinded) from catching and nearly crushing her with a single hand. Kurono and Izumi joined forces, each wielding a Gantz Sword, to kill it through simultaneous decapitation and disembowelment. Surprisingly, every member of the team that faced the Ultimate Oni survived.

Players: Kurono, old man, Izumi, Sakata, Sakurai, Daizamon, Reika, Inaba, Ayaka, the two rapists, Takeshi, the four executives.

Survivors: Kurono, old man, Izumi, Sakata, Daizamon, Reika, Inaba, Takeshi.

Counting the points: Kurono: Got free, old man: revived Katou, Izumi: Got a new weapon, Sakata: revived Sakurai, Daizamon: revived Nishi, Reika: revived Tae.

The first hunt of Phase 2 begins soon after Kurono's death. The two vampires who teleported with the other Hunters to the room also received suits, indicating that they are now under Gantz's rules. As usual, three other newcomers join the group.

Takeshi was the first to be teleported from the room. Kaze warned the boy to stay put and wait, but Takeshi had to run from a mysterious woman who began pursuing him soon after he was sent. After reaching the place, Kaze started looking for Takeshi while the rest of the team questioned themselves on how to deal with the two vampires who were sent with them, as some were still angry at both for killing Kurono. It did not take long for them to realize that they were in Osaka instead of Tokyo.

As was the case in their previous mission, the Hunters were visible to normal humans. The two Vampires did not appear fazed by this development, and attempted to leave the designated hunting area before seeing the three other newcomers do so and die. They guessed that bombs had been planted in their heads, and turned back.

Meanwhile, the mysterious alien woman put her hands on Takeshi and was about to eat him when the boy used the power of his suit for the first time, pulling free and killing her. Soon after the first alien's death, though, a vast host of various aliens rose from a river nearby, and Takeshi ended up having to fight them by himself as Kaze continued to search desperately for him. These aliens mostly resembled various monsters and supernatural creatures from Japan's mythology, and apparently reeked of rotten fish. Like the Hunters, they were also visible to humans.

The rest of the team were tracking down the aliens and preparing to fight them, hoping to win enough points to revive Kurono, when they ended up meeting a group of locals, wearing the same black suits as them. Each faction was questioning if the other could be part of the alien enemies until one of the Osaka Team recognized Reika. Curiously, some of them were carrying some weapons never seen by the Tokyo party. It is later discovered that nearly every member of the Osaka team has completed the game at least once, some even clearing it multiple times. As such, a number wielded weapons redeemed upon gaining 100 points.

For some reason, the Hunters from Osaka had not started to engage the aliens yet, and although the aliens started to kill the bystanders, they still watched the scene without reacting. Some of them were even taking drugs while waiting. Despite Katou's urge to save the innocents from the aliens, he and his companions were warned to not do anything. Meanwhile, an exhausted and frightened Takeshi was about to be eaten by a huge alien when Kaze arrived to save him.

When the Osaka Team started to take action, they proved to be crueler and even more vicious than the aliens themselves, killing even the defenseless ones and even raping a female one resembling a rokurokubi just for fun. Their party was stopped by the arrival of a stronger alien who started to turn the tide. The majority of the Osaka team appeared to be sadists who found a thrill in killing others, considering the game as anything but entertainment. During this time, Takeshi protected Kaze from an alien by using a using a technique he had observed Kaze practice. He managed to knock down the alien for a while, but his suit started to lose power, and Kaze had to finish it by himself. Afterward, Kaze swore to live for the boy and to protect him from harm.

Kato, Reika, and the others became uncertain if they were going to revive Kei Kurono or not because Sakata observed that reviving cheapens the value of a human life and begets an unending cycle. Sakata made the bold declaration that should he be killed, he would not want to be revived and that the Hunters' goal should be to free themselves from the Gantz, regardless of who died along the way. Sakata's comments about cheap life forced Kato to re-evaluate the idea of reviving Kurono, as well as question the value of his own resurrected life. Kato saved a few wandering civilians from being eaten by one of the aliens. He initially faced criticism that he did not act sooner to save them, but was eventually thanked. He also becomes acquainted with Anzu Yamasaki, a 23-year-old single mother and perhaps the only member of the Osaka Team who was not a sadist or a thrill-seeker (the only other possible exception being Oka) who initially teases him about his declarations of helping people. After Kato saved her from a particularly powerful alien, she informs him of the existence of rare 100-point aliens.

The Vampires offered some potential insight in to the nature of the aliens in this round when they stated that one of the aliens was "one of us". The female vampire commented on whether they should be killing their own or trying to realize their original goal of eliminating the Hunters. They run into a group of three aliens atop a shop. The Vampires talk to one of them, who tells them that since they have the Hunter signal, he won't do anything to protect them. They then find two more aliens and seem to work together with them by killing three members of the Osaka team. However, the aliens decided to kill the Vampires as well. They managed to cut the female Vampire's arm and one finger off the male Vampire, who was forced to kill the aliens. After the fight, the male Vampire finally chose the side of Tokyo's Hunters, in order to "get his finger back".

As shown by a device used by one of the Osaka team members, the most powerful aliens in the mission are Nurarihyon, worth 100 points, a Tengu alien worth 71 points, and humanoid dog alien worth 68. The Nurarihyon has the power to transform, changing into a child, into a woman and into a tall, bald man. While into the form of a man, when he opens his eyes, a lightbeam goes from them like a lantern and destroys everything in its sight. Even the suit seems to be useless against this destructive lightbeam. He also has the power of regeneration, making Nurarihyon more fearsome than the Oni Alien by far.

Recently Kato was rescuing one of the Osaka Gantz members, until the fox and the tengu alien appears. A group of soldiers who had been questioning Kato open fire upon the two aliens, but to no avail. They were mercilessly wiped out by these two aliens. As they turned their attention to Kato, three members of the Osaka Gantz team intervened to do battle with them. Even the special weapons the Osaka Gantz team members used had little effect upon these two monsters. The Tengu alien managed to take out one of the Osaka Gantz members before succumbing to death itself, and the fox alien had been decapitated by George. Meanwhile the 100 point alien was able to escape and regenerate itself. George and Kuwabara attempted to take on the Nura alien, which caused Nura to display one of his abilities of shape shifting into a giant female composed of the same unclothed females. As the Nura alien transforms into the giant, it surrounded George and in the end spat out his head. It then goes after Kuwabara, enveloping him in the same way. Kuwabara's incredible lust, however, allows him to break free and then starts attempting to rape the amalgam of female bodies that the Nurarihyon is comprised of. The Attempts startle the creature and it throws him free ripping off his arms and legs. Kato attempts to take it down but after exhausting every weapon in his disposal he is caught in its hand. at this point Nishi attacks with an H-Gun. After completely crushing the massive beast it reforms again, this time in the form of a quadruped beast. Now the Nurarihyon has attacked and ripped off Nishi's right arm and has now approached the Tokyo Gantz team, who have figured out that the area they can stay in is slowly shrinking causing them to go back.

During the first display of the Nurarihyon's abilities, a strange, invisible object of massive proportions (as big as some of the largest aliens) appeared. It is possible this might have something to do with the unseen Osaka member Oka who has accumulated over seven-hundred points, the largest score by far.

During the encounter, old man feels that his arms are ripped off by the Nurarihyon's abilities. Kaze and Takeshi jump over the Nurarihyon alien followed by Inaba who in the progress lost his right leg and both arms. Reika, old man, Sakurai, and Sakata are still left in front of the alien. Sakata decides to sacrifies his own life holding back the alien in order for Reika, old man, and Sakurai to jump over. Oka, the Osaka Team's 700 pointer is shown controlling a big robot. Oka then engages a large minotaur-spider alien and defeats it, though his robot and bike are destroyed in the process. He then finds the Tokyo team who had been fleeing the 100 point alien, and prepares to engage it. Nurarihyon then attacks Oka, Oka counters it destroying its left knee, and then its jaw. Nurarihyon attacks Oka with its tentacles, but Nuri's beheaded by Oka's elbow blades. The Nurahihyon then regenerates into an algamation of its female and beastly forms, which Oka obliterates from a short distance using a burst of power from the cap in the right palm of his suit. The remaining and able Tokyo team approach Oka, who warns them of their imminent deaths while pointing out a new form of the Nurarihyon emerging from a clump of remaining flesh. He and the Nurari, which appears as a naked bald man with the ability to speak, do battle, but Oka's palm bursts fail to damage it and his physical attacks are nulled by its quick regeneration. The Nurarihyon comments as a child would while taking notes on Oka's fighting style, then imitates Oka's look by growing elbow blades and greatly enlarged arms. Nurari and Oka then continue the fight, with the Nurari imitating Oka's fighting capacities managing to knock Oka's mask off. The Nurarihyon overwhelms Oka, who uses a smokescreen to slip out of the upgraded layer of his suit and behind Nura to cut it's body in half with a Gantz sword, after which he noted it was impossible to defeat Nura using normal human perception methods. Oka sees that trying to beat the Nurarihyon is too risky and goes off leaving Katou and the rest of the Tokyo team to fight it. When Katou is about to attack, Nurarihyon shoots 'blood-balls' at everyone. This attack leaves Takeshi injured. Daizamon Kaze, distressed by Takeshi's injury begins to fight the Nurarihyon who now has changed form to a long haired, naked female. As the fight begins Kaze seems to have the advantage, both dodging the Nurarihyon's attacks and injuring it with his own. Eventually, Kaze using the enhanced strength of the Gantz suit decapitates the Nurarihyon with a single strike. The Nurari then regenerated three more heads and other body-parts claiming to understand kaze's tecnique. After a little bit more fighting Kaze does his signature back move and kills all of nurari except his bottom half. with the power of the gantz suit Kaze wastes the monster. Then when all seems finished nurari revived itself again from blood and organs.
