Ganga Expressway

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ganga Expressway Project was launched by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati after coming to power in 2007. The project aims to construct a 1047 km access controlled eight-laned expressway running along the Ganga river. This expressway will connect Greater Noida to Ballia thus ensuring high speed connectivity between the Eastern and Western boundaries of Uttar Pradesh [1]. The project is expected to be completed in the next four years [2].

[edit] Divisions

The expressway has been divided into four sectors:

Route Links Length Cost of Construction Date of Completion
Greater Noida to Fatehgarh Farrukhabad 253 km Rs. 7,631 crore TBA
Fatehgarh to Dalmau (Raibareli) Lucknow 305 km Rs. 8,012 crore TBA
Dalmau (Raibareli) to Aurai (Bhadohi) Mirzapur 211 km Rs. 6,124 crore TBA
Aurai (Bhadohi) to Balia None 278 km Rs. 8,058 crore TBA

[edit] Construction and Problems

The construction of the expressway is going to be done under a Public-private partnership model. The UP government has accepted bids from various infrastructure companies. The Uttar Pradesh government has awarded the controversial Rs 30,000 crore Ganga Expressway contract to Jaypee Infratech Pvt. Ltd even as one of the bidders is considering a legal challenge. [3]. The company with the winning bid will be given a 35 year period to extract toll. The companies which had submitted the bids included:

The project is being developed under consultancy from SREI Infrastructure Finance Ltd and the Indian Railways’ consultancy firm RITES. The construction is anticipated to be started by April 2008 [4].

The project for which approximately 631.1 square kilometres has been earmarked has seen stiff opposition from the central Congress government and local farmers alike. 70% of the land earmarked for the project is agricultural land and only about 10% is currently with the UP government. Mayawati has announced major sops for the farmers whose land will be lost to the project. The sops include free residential properties, upwards of Rs. 35,000 cash and quota allotment in jobs and residential properties[5][6]. .
