[edit] Comments

Couldn't find any templates like Template:Moby_game for GameFAQs, so I made this.

I removed the need for a slash after type. This template is supposed to make things easier, after all. Let me go fix the affected now... - Hbdragon88 05:45, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Changed my mind; having to add the slash is consistent with Moby Games, and I don't want to have to force editors to have to memroize two different formats. - Hbdragon88 06:09, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
Added italics to the template itself. This slightly breaks them; old pages willb e bolded and have an extra set of apostrophes now until they are fixed. - Hbdragon88 06:16, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
Don't do that. Some pages do not need italics, and some need partial italics. In the future, when making sweeping changes like this, could you please discuss them first? --Pagrashtak 06:26, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
Can you cite an example where that would take place? I was under the impression that all games use italics, and italics are used in the Nintendo.com template, which is why i implemented it (similar to why I reverted my slash changes). - Hbdragon88 07:09, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
If an editor wanted to differentiate between different versions of a game: Game (GCN) or Game (PS2), or wanted to link to a non-game page, such as the GameCube page. --Pagrashtak 03:58, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
Point taken. I retract my other statements. - Hbdragon88 05:00, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Italics

Please do not add the italics markup to the template. In some cases (such as console disambiguation), italics is not needed. --- 71.67.132.178 20:40, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Rationale

This template (and the MobyGames one, for that matter) seem pretty pointless. Why is it important for such a small fragment of text to be standardized? Twinxor t 21:17, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

  • See Category:External link templates #2. GameFAQs is a well-known source that covers games better than Wikipedia does. There is no reason not to standardize. --- RockMFR 01:13, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Linking using just the id number

I came across this link format a few months ago while on Game Rankings:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/redirect.html?id=447244

Is it worthwhile to change the template to support this format? --- RockMFR 17:04, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

Well, holy shit. It's even simpler than I thought. Nvm. --- RockMFR 21:09, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Proposed template change

I propose a new parameter be added to the template that would allow you to optionally add non-italicized information. Since most of the video games that use this template don't have non-italicized information in the title theres no point in making editors have to type out the extra markup around the title to italicize it. With my proposed change if an editor wanted the part of the title that wasn't italicized they would add "|for=" followed by the non-italicized part of the title.

For example:

With non-italicized text

Proposed:

{GameSpot|id=920787|name=New Super Mario Bros.|for=(DS)}}

Current:

{GameSpot|id=920787|name=''New Super Mario Bros.'' (DS)}}

Without non-italicized text

Proposed:

{GameSpot|id=920787|name=New Super Mario Bros.}}

Current:

{GameSpot|id=920787|name=''New Super Mario Bros.''}}

(Note the extra ' ' the editor has to type around the title.)

  • Oppose. It's an unneeded parameter that doesn't work for all cases (such as the case when linking to something like "GameCube hardware" on GameFAQs). No added work needs to be done for editors as most of them would be copying and pasting the template anyways, and any that use it improperly could easily be fixed (as I normally go through the "what links here" pages to check for spamming anyways). --- RockMFR 05:53, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
