[edit] Some Talmud Bavli as referencing

"That day they removed the doorkeeper [of the study hall] and permission was granted to the students to enter. For Rabban Gamaliel would proclaim and say: Any student whose inside is not as his outside may not enter the study hall. That day many benches were added. Rabbi Yochanan said Abba Yosef ben Dostai and the Rabanan (= the majority of the scholars) disagree about the number. One says four hundred benches were added and one says seven hundred benches. Rabban Gamaliel was dispirited. He said: Perphaps, God forbide, I have withheld Torah for Israel! That night he was shown in his dream white pitchers filed with ash. But that was not the case it was only to put his mind at ease that they showed him this." Talmud Babli 28A. 202.161.29.254 17:49, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
