Galway Girl

"The Galway Girl" or "Galway Girl" is a song written by Steve Earle[1] and recorded with Sharon Shannon, which was featured on Earle's 2000 album Transcendental Blues[2].

The song tells the semi-autobiographical story of the singer's reaction to the beauty of a girl he meets in Galway, Ireland[1]. Local references include Salthill, and The Long Walk. Gerard Butler's character sings the song for Hilary Swank's character in the 2007 film, P.S. I Love You, and a version by Nellie McKay appears on the soundtrack album.

A live version with Mundy and Sharon Shannon became a cult hit thanks to RTÉ 2fm playing the track every Friday since Will Leahy took on the drive time show[1] . It was the biggest selling download in the Republic of Ireland in 2007, winning a Meteor Award in the process. A studio version was number one in the Irish Singles Chart for five weeks in April and May 2008[3].Mundy also recorded an Irish-language version of the track, entitled "Cailín na Gaillimhe", for Ceol '08, an Irish-language compilation record released in 2008 to raise money for several Irish charities.
