FFX, also known as Future Frigate eXperimental (Hangul: 차기호위함사업) is a South Korean government plan to produce 12 - 30 Multirole Frigates to replace currently-using Pohang and Ulsan Class Frigates (Hangul: 포항/울산급 호위함). The initial batch will mainly focus on regular operations like patrolling the coastlines of the peninsula, detecting enemy submarines and convoying transports, but batch-II and -III will more be specialized on anti-air and anti-submarine duties. Although the frigates will be constructed on a stealth-based platform and equipped with 76mm+ cannon, Korean Anti-Submarine Rockets (Hangul: 청상어; Blue Shark), Korean Anti-Ship Missiles (Hangul: 해성; Sea Star) with Korean VLS, Korean Surface to Air Missiles (Hangul: 철매; Iron Eagle), CIWS(either RAM or Goalkeepr), Anti-Submarine Helicopter, and possibly SPY-1F radar, the detailed specifications are not announced yet from the officials. Defense Acquisition Program Administration (Hangul: 방위사업청) announced that the government plans to build six of these 2300-3000 ton frigates by 2015.
