Description
English: Funerary stele from Nicomedia (modern İzmit) in Bithynia, white marble, ca. 120 BC. The inscription reads: Ξράσων Διογένους τήνδε ἀνέστησεν στυλλεῖδαν υἱῶν β’ Δεξιφάνους ἐτῶν ε’ Ξράσοωνος ἐτῶν δ’ Ἑρμῆ θρέψαντος αὐτῶν ἐτῶν κε’ ἐν τῇ συμπτώσει τοῦ σεισμοῦ οὕτως αὐτὰ περιειλήφει / “Thrasōn, son of Diogenes, erected this funerary stele for his two sons, Dexiphanes, age 5, and Thrasōn, age 4, and for Hermēs, age 25, who brought them up. In the earthquake collapse, so did he hold them in his arms.”
Français : Stèle funéraire de Nicomédie (actuelle İzmit) en Bithynie, marbre blanc, v. 120 av. J.-C. Porte l'inscription : « Thrasôs, fils de Diogène, a élevé cette stèle funéraire de ses deux fils, Dexiphane, 5 ans, et Thrasôn, 4 ans, ainsi que d'Hermès, 25 ans, qui les élevait. Ainsi les tenait-il dans ses bras lors de l'écroulement du tremblement de terre. »
