[edit] Notability of Example
When another editor deleted the rapper Example's name from the "Famous Residents" list a few weeks ago I had initially thought the user was being snobbish about the fact that Example is a rapper. Yet another user (unregistered) then re-added Example to the page. Having looked a bit more into the matter, I have to note that Example, despite disproportional representation on Wikipedia, is not in any way famous enough to be on the a list of Fulham's notable residents. He is an "up-and-coming" musician who has been played a couple of times on the TV. Currently on his own page there is a debate raging about whether he should be listed on Wikipedia at all (I think he should, though his article is currently more promotional bigoraphy material than notable facts), but he cannot yet claim to be worthy of being one of an area's famous residents (he isn't famous at all really). He has never been in a chart of any sort. He has never been featured in a major publication of any sort. I'm afraid being signed to a record label (a minor one at that) is not enough to make you notable.
I will remove his name. Rather than revert my edit, I would request that anyone who wants to offer reason for his inclusion respond here first.--Zoso Jade (talk) 10:40, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Folklore
This section needs some modification, the story, though interesting, needs to be changed for the sake of comprehension, while as far as I am aware, Fulham's etymology is that it originally meant "land in the crook of a river bend belonging to a man named Fulla". I would make modifications now, but thought I would start up the discussion page as I don't want to hack away at someone else's work. Driller thriller 20:17, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
I was always told an addendum to the story of the two sisters. One day one of them threw the hammer short and it landed on a stone on the foreshore, breaking in two. The sisters were unable to continue their work until a man came down the river in a boat who was able to mend it for them. The place he came from was then named 'Hammer-smith' in his honour! --davidL 16:32, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
- Someone went ahead and removed the Folklore section: I've gone ahead and put it back but it needs a major rewrite, I'll start but I'd rather someone who's actually heard the story had a look at it as well. Driller thriller 17:12, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Balance
I don't have a problem with the local Labour party being listed, but I do think for the purposes of balance we should at least be adding the website for the sitting, Conservative, MP. Driller thriller 13:39, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

- Isn't the section on politics a little long, and a little irrelevant? People tuning into this page probably aren't interested in political statistics about who was elected when in the area. I propose trimming it down. --SandyDancer 18:29, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

- I disagree. I think a trim would be a mistake and the shifting political trends in the borough are important. However, more context might improve the article: take it beyond the level of simple statistics and provide some analysis of what they mean. Just a thought. - Having just re-read the article for the first time in quite a while I see that my suggestion is pretty much redundant, apart from to say more of the same might help. I'll look before I post next time. Driller thriller 20:38, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

- My view is that people aren't that interested in party politics and when they look at a page describing an area they don't expect to see a party political broadcast. --SandyDancer 21:09, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

- I'm afraid party politics is just how the British political system works and a demonstration of how it represents itself in an area is not only interesting, but positively vital. These election results do not represent a "party political broadcast": they give an elucidation into the dynamic social shifts that have affected the borough over this century. These statistics represent how the borough is changing, they are therefore pretty interesting and I can tell you that when I first came to this page it was content that I was looking for. Like I said before though, more context is always helpful. Driller thriller 21:35, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

- So what you are really saying is you personally are interested in politics? Fair enough. So am I. More content is helpful but not where it imbalances an article. --SandyDancer 21:52, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

The point that was being made is that when one says "people... aren't interested in political statistics", one is making a generalisation that might lead us down the wrong path. There is no typical Wikipedia user and therefore we must make a judgement about what content is important in demonstrating a topic to the uninitiated. In this case the changing political trends of the area are important as they represent something much more profound: they represent, though they don't quite demonstrate on their own; hence the need for context. You make a point about "imbalance" though: if you mean that the statistics as they stand at present present a biased view then this is an entirely separate issue and should be dealt with following Wikipedia's POV policies. [edit] QPR
Why has someone added QPR as one of the teams in the area. They are based in Hammersmith and this is a page about Fulham.
