In the book, Outernet: Friend or Foe?, Jack Armstrong gets a laptop for his birthday. The laptop is really the Server, the last link in an intergalactic communications network, which he soon finds out. It seems to have no way to open it, but when his friend Merle says the word "friend", it opens up. It asks, "Friend or Foe?", and they say "Friend". Then it starts up, and at first, Jack, Loaf, and Merle think that it is a game (but it's not!). Soon, after, though, they begin to realize that it's not a game. After that, they have some adventures, while trying to keep the Server away from the evil Tyrant.
