[edit] Advocacy regarding sex tourism
Fred, thanks for being my advocate. You made some good points when you contacted me. I may need to take some alternatives. But the situation is improving slowly. It’s less confrontational now at least. I'll get back to you if I need any more help. Thanks again.

[edit] Sweden project
Fred, sorry to start a new thread, I can't find the old discussion. Wow, you worked hard. It looks great and almost 1/4 done. So, we continue to add under the headings or start working to improve the articles on the list, right? I wanted to ask, since you have been involved on the Wikimedia side, could you put up some links to the picture archives there so that people know where to look for images please? We could most likely also use handy links to copyright issues for Swedish art and other types of images. I have some stuff from antique books and archives that I scanned this summer while traveling. I'll upload the images this weekend and link them to my sandbox, for now. And links to official translations of gov. terms, literature lists, etc, need to go up too, right? Or is that compiled elsewhere? Best wishes, Pia 21:54, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- OK, I found the Resources section on the "Board" page right after posting this, so I realize that it's already linked up with the project page. Just need to figure out how the Category Sweden portal is relating to the project page now. Getting there. :) Pia 02:54, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:WikiProject Swedish cities
This is to inform you that the project listed above is currently being considered for deletion. The project's creator and only listed member, User:Mic, has a note on his talk page saying he is absent and to contact you, so I am doing so. You should also note Wikipedia:WikiProject Swedish counties is being considered for deletion as well, under virtually identical circumstances. Please feel free to take part in the discussion of the project. Thank you. Badbilltucker 17:52, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
- Yea, that's right, I wrote that note on Mic's talkpage. I'll look into it.
- Fred-Chess 19:16, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
- In response to your comment, I am currently going through the entire list of projects for inclusion in the eventual final version of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. The projects I nominated, which are both inactive and have only the founding editor listed as a member, qualify under both of the informal criteria which have been used. This is not to say that anyone would oppose continuation of the project's efforts. The project could clearly be restarted by a currently active editor, or it could become a work group or task force of a large project dealing with the nation as a whole. It is simply saying that the projects as they exist have received no particular attention or activity. Thank you for your speedy response, and I hope this makes my actions in proposing the deletions a little clearer. Badbilltucker 20:54, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Earlier mentioned "Swedish ..." projects up for deletion
It has been suggested on the MfD page that these projects might be moved and made a part of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Sweden. Certainly, if you wanted to just integrate in the data, or even create task forces/work groups to deal with these subnational entities specifically, I think just about everyone would agree with the merge. It looks like your the primary force behind the Sweden project, though, so it's really your call to make. I think most of us would agree with whatever you decide. [edit] Third opinion
Hello, Fred. I don't know many other Swedes around, therefore I decided to seek your opinion. Please check this new Gdanzig. The guy who identifies himself as "Finnish nationalist" on his user page routinely replaces Swedish place names in medieval contexts with the Finnish ones. As I understand, he does not like the fact that the castle was built by Swedes. I assume the intense finnization of the article violates WP:NC. He was blocked for 31 hours in consequence of his egregious incivility but now is back to it. Could you advise what should be done in this situation? --Ghirla -трёп- 12:50, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
- I asked user:Uppland to look into it. He knows more than I do about old Swedish/Finnish history. / Fred-Chess 08:39, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
-
- I guess this guy will eventually cause his own banning in some way. By that time he may have driven away a couple of actually good and potentially productive users, frustrated by the fact that Wikipedia can't keep rabid nationalists in check. Then he will come back with another username, and the whole thing will start again... up+land 21:53, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Blocked
I have blocked both you and Jaakko Sivonen for 24 hours for move warring. See Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard#Jaakko Sivonen (talk · contribs). --bainer (talk) 00:44, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
- Okay... I hope you know what you're doing... / Fred-Chess 07:54, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
- While waiting for the block to expire or someone to unblock me, I might as well spent a few minutes composing a reply to the WP:AN, as I can't do any other editing anyways :-P
- Dear Sirs of Wikipedia
- I accnowledge that my procedure was incorrect. In case you question my motivation, I thought a block was uncontroversial since I was a neutral part who had only come to the article on the request of Ghirlandajo three days ago, and that I acted on behalf of four other prominent editors (as seen on Talk:Treaty of Fredrikshamn).
- Again, I realize that my involvement in this dispute appeared greater than I considered it to be myself, that the block was not uncontroversial, and that I therefore should have posted a request for a neutral review at the WP:AN first.
- Fred-Chess 09:41, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
-
-
- Note that I only commented on your use of administrative tools, that didn't form the basis for the block. I blocked you and Jaakko each for 24 hours because of the move warring on the page, Jaakko repeatedly moving despite opposition to his initial move and you reverting and labeling the edits as vandalism – when the dispute was quite plainly a content dispute – rather than attracting the attention of a neutral admin to move-protect the page. As is typical when dealing with edit or move warring, I treated both participants equally and blocked both of you.
- I'm more than happy to unblock you if you understand why I blocked you in the first place. --bainer (talk) 13:01, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
-
-
-
-
- My first action on that page was actually to move protect it, acting as a neutral admin on the request of Ghirlandajo. This move protection was then removed by the admin user:JIP, on request of Jaakko. I warned Jaakko that page moves should have consensus support, and that continuously acting against the community is labelled vandalism. Jaakko still commenced to move the page. As I said, I thought it was uncontroversial to block him at that point. I was apparently wrong, and I have said that.
- I would also like to reply to the latest post on the administrators noticeboard that claims that blocks may be punitive. WP:BP says: Blocks are used to prevent damage or disruption to Wikipedia. They should not be used as a punitive measure. (second sentence). I just say this as an informative reply.
- I assume you blocked me because intervention against problematic users shouldn't be done uniliterally (on the English Wikipedia).
- Fred-Chess 13:53, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
-
-
-
-
-
-
- The problem is that you reverted the move after move-protecting the page. As Reinoutr said on WP:AN, you picked up where Petri Krohn left off. You then reverted the page again after JIP unprotected it, and probably would have continued to do so had you not blocked Jaakko. After unblocking Jaakko I blocked you both as a preventative measure, to prevent further move warring.
- There's nothing wrong with intervening where a dispute is disruptive, but it's a very bad idea to jump into the dispute yourself. It was because you were move-warring that I blocked you and Jaakko both, not any other reason. --bainer (talk) 14:41, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Bert_I._Gordon.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

Thanks for bringing my attention to Zebra.jpg. I cannot verify the source because I wasn't the original uploader--it appears to have been uploaded to an earlier version of the software. I must have done a conversion job on it, and my upload is the first one retained after we switched to my code. At any rate, the other photos on the Zebra page are much better, so I see no reason not to simply remove all references to this one and remove it. --LDC 22:35, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Som Wardner.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Som Wardner.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
- On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Chowbok ☠ 17:43, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Advocacy
Hi Fred, It is really nice of you to advocate for Swadhyayee. He has had some good ideas but has not always been to express them well. One thought: Be careful not to advocate things that would violate Wikipedia's policies, even if Swadhyayee's position is that he would like to do so. He frequently seeks to make edits that are uncited and, at least in the view of some, POV and one-sided. You can help him articulate his position, but I don't think you can go so far as to help him argue that we should ignore Wikipedia policies, which he has done on several occasions (for example, he has advocated the use of original research as being more reliable than citations, he has argued that non-Indian editors should be screened out of participation, he has argued that only Hindus with a background in Hinduism should be allowed to contribute to the Hinduism article, and has argued that POV edits are justified when they help to give the world a positive impression of Hinduism).
I do not say any of the above things for the purpose of incriminating him, only to remind you that there are some things he advocates which you should not, in your capacity as an advocate, support him in arguing. Thanks again for helping him to articulate his problems in a civil and understandable way. HeBhagawan 11:54, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
Fred, Thanks for taking a responsible approach to advocacy. Just to be clear: you didn't do anything improper. I merely wanted to suggest that you not do anything improper in the future. After reading your comments on my talk page, I realize that there was no need to warn you, since you have already thought it through. Unfortunately, I don't have an email address that I am willing to share with people I don't know. I get too much spam as it is, so I avoid sharing it. So, for better or for worse, we will have to have any discussions on Wikipedia. It shouldn't be a problem to do so because I am not willing to get involved in any private disputes with anybody. Wikipedia is public, and I'm ultimately only interested in making good articles. This means discussing content, not people. And there is nothing so delicate about content that it can't be discussed in a public forum. So long as we don't personalize our conversations, I think they can be discussed openly. Thanks! HeBhagawan 12:55, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
Hi Fred, I agree to what you suggested as a general matter. However, I reserve the right to post Wikipedia policies on the talk page of anybody whose violations 1) make my job as an editor more difficult, or 2) detrimentally affect an article. I agree not to post Wikipedia policies on his talk pages as long as he does not commit any violations that fall into one of these categories. HeBhagawan 14:12, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Using a picture of a CD cover on a Wikipedia article (Ilaiyaraja)
Dear Fred, With regard to your comment on how to improve the article Ilaiyaraaja, you mentioned that I could include a photograph of a CD cover of the musician's in the article. I looked it up on Wikipedia Common's licensing page to see if this is allowed. From the checklist provided, it appears that I can do that. Just want to confirm this with you before I upload a photo of a CD cover whether to your opinion it is OK to do so. Cheers! AppleJuggler 05:04, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hi. No, you cannot upload CD-covers on Commons. Only on English Wikipedia , with a {{cd-cover}} license. / Fred-Chess 05:18, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Turtles in Time
Hi Fred. I've finished rewriting the Levels and Enemies section of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time, and took the article off hold in the GA nominations. I don't know if you're watching it, so I took the liberty of writing this to inform you. Since you had already started reviewing it and were interested enough in it to leave your comments, I figured you might want to look at it again and comment on the changes... or pass it! ;) -- Ritchy 00:54, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
- I see you reverted the fail GA by Cocoaguy. While I agree with you, I have to ask, are we actually allowed to do that? I thought we had to go through Wikipedia:Good articles/Review first. At any rate, I put a request for review of the decision on that page at the same time you reverted it, so we're covered both ways. -- Ritchy 17:43, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
- I wouldn't be suprised if someone cried his discomfort of my actions, and tell me that I can't arbitrarily decide who is wrong and right, etc. But how much time must we spend discussing back and forth such obvious cases? I'm trying to maintain the integrity of the GA system -- how can this be done when we allow people to completely disregard the GA criterias? While we are then discussion the reviews, and what to do about it, the effects of these articles being GA promoted or failed have already been spread. Trying to look through edit histories days later is more difficult. If anyone disagrees with my actions, then let us discuss it! A thread has been opened at Wikipedia talk:Good article candidates#user:_Cocoaguy. / Fred-Chess 17:48, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] GA for Agrippina (opera)
You left this article on hold. I think I've fixed most of your concerns - anything else, or is this alright for GA? Cheers, Moreschi 18:29, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
Perhaps you could give me specific examples of sentences that are unsatisfactory? That would make my life a lot easier. Best, Moreschi 18:48, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
Just to clarify - is that your suggestion for the entire lead? Moreschi 19:13, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
Hmmm. Stubby paragraphs like that are generally frowned upon as lacking flow, and per WP:LEAD it is too short: an article this length normally wants two mid-size paragraphs for the lead. Moreschi 19:26, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hi there, and thanks. I tried to address both your concerns when rewriting the intro, with emphasis on stating what the opera is all about, or as I explained on Moreschi's talk page, "so that readers can immediately tell that it's about Agrippina the Younger and not, for example a soldier who kills his wife or a deaf, dumb, and blind boy who's really good at pinball." Thanks again! --Kyoko 20:40, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

- Are the problems fixed for GA? Or is there anything else problematic that you have in mind? Cheers, Moreschi 21:08, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] a question about your name
Hi, I looked at your user page, and I was wondering if you happened to like the musical Chess, seeing as the word "Chess" is in your account name, as is the name "Fred", also the name of one of the characters in the show. [edit] Advocacy/Arbitration
Fred, thanks for the wonderful comment on the Sex Tourism page. Yes, that is a good summary that you have made. Edgarde immediately replied and said he wants to go to attribution, and not use a mediator. Why don't we wait a few days and see how things pan out. I would personally like to avoid arbitration. But if it comes to that, I will need some help filing for an arbitration request, please, as I have never done it before.

My name is Fred.
I'll await the results of Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets/Devalover until I take any actions.
Fred-Chess 00:45, 26 November 2006 (UTC) b
- I saw the "sockpuppet" page, and I must say this is just rediculous. First, Edgarde accuses me of being paid off. Now he is accusing me of impersonating other editors... As he said, one of the other editors he is attacking has been involved with Wikipedia before I even made my first edit on the Sex Tourism page. This is just another example of how Edgarde has repeatedly disrespected other editors throughout our discussion who do not support his point of view. He is misrepresenting me as well, saying that Sly Traveler is my own website. He is confusing terms to make it appear as if I support child sex tourism. He is replacing sex tourism links with child sex tourism links that do not pertain to the topic as it is currently discribed. I'm going to file for arbitration right now. This type of mistreatment must stop.
- P.S. Fred, I'm notifying you that I have filed a Requests for Arbitration.
- Daniel E. Knodel, M.A. 01:42, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
-
- Fred, would you please say something on the request for arbitration page. Everyone involved is making accusations against me based on things I did not do. Please tell them to not make assumptions until the puppet charges have been cleared. How much longer do you expect for puppet review to take? It has prevented you from taking part in the request for arbitration.
- Also, I don't think it is right how the other advocate, Addhoc, is taking sides in a depute as a bystander. He has a responsibility to keep to a neutral view point. His accusations on the request for arbitration are less than professional in how he is trying to belittle me and deduct from my request.
- Daniel E. Knodel, M.A. 23:36, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

-
- Fred, we are entering the workshop stage of arbitration. Would you please add a comment. There are some problems still. Edgarde is still accusing me of impersonating Devalover, even after the results of the puppet review charges, and after he has even acknowledged that these charges were wrongfully made. Interestingly though editor Devalover came back and offered a solution that I'm happy with, which is on the talkpage of Sex Tourism, and which is the current state of the article. Other than this, Edgarde is still calling the link I want added a "commercial spam link", after you told him it was not. We are in the final stages now, and any help you can offer on the Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Sex tourism/Workshop would be very much appreciated.

[edit] Please react with moderation in your edit summaries
Dear Fred. I hid a text of yours asking for an explanation [2] and you reverted it with the following edit summary: stop removing material. Try to be constructive and add or correct it instead)[3]. This is insulting as it was only hid once, and you treat me like a vandal. It is also highly ironic considering your own prolific removal of information: [4], [5], [6], [7], and [8]. In the only removal, where I could find a motivation, you state that you consider the information "speculative and outdated":"rm speculative and outdated EB1911 text". However, the only thing that is wrong with this "speculative and outdated" text is the author of the Encyclopedia Britannica article based it on sources, such as Heimskringla.--Berig 11:26, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

- Thanks for the advice -- but I consider the behaviour of you and your compatriot on the talk page of Talk:Agrippina (opera) and on the GA Review page to be of very poor etiquette and detremental for the whole GA process, and I will not let that dog rest. / Fred-Chess 21:25, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Agrippina (opera)
Hi Fred,
With all due respect (and I mean that sincerely) I'd like to suggest that you explicitly state that you recuse yourself from the voting on Agrippina (opera), just as I have already done. It has been the subject of extended discussion, and deserves closure.

[edit] Kvens again
Hello. I wonder if we have a Kven-editor at Ancient kings of Finland (diff). So far no contribs by West Coast Shining (talk • contribs) anywhere else. Best regards, Angus McLellan (Talk) 17:03, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
- Looks like he was blocked by user:Khoikhoi -- wow, he is efficient. / Fred-Chess 01:21, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Bomässan Bo01 and Västra hamnen
Hi Fred, I found these two articles on the Swedish Wikipedia sv:Bomässan Bo01, and sv:Västra hamnen. Do you think we should have articles about them on en:? Would you like to translate them? Regards, DVD+ R/W 23:35, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for getting back to me, I kinda figured that we should have those articles though I can't really read them. It's ok if you don't translate them, I think someone will eventually or will write them from scratch. I might try later, even if I don't know much. DVD+ R/W 04:53, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Hi Fred
Hi Fred,
Haven't heard from you in a while. Hope you're doing OK.

[edit] Thedrunkendiale
- Drea Fred:
- I am wondering of this site could be considered an internet phenomena or not. I know it is rather popular and extremely humorous. It features a guy who holds a weekly contest offering $100 via PayPal to the individual who leaves him he best Drunk dialing message on his voicemail.
- I did not add this site to this article yet for fear that people would think I am self-promoting. I have no affiliation with the site and can’t find any direct marketing used to purchase products. I just think it is very funny and well known around my area.
- I look forward to some objective input before I add, or do not add this site to the list. Take a look for yourself, you be the judge…

P.S. I posted the same message on User_talk:Wavy_G for more opinions. Look forward to hearing from you...
