New music.

New music is exciting and new.

New music does not need tonality.

New music does not need atonality.

New music is sound organized in time.

New music defines “music” as anything that is intended to be music. (This article is music.)

New music does not need to be beautiful. Beauty is an obsolete standard of art, which is now just one of many things to be expressed.

New music does not need to deal with human emotion. Lack of emotion could be a perfectly legitimate premise for a new work.

New music does not need to be memorable. Being able to recall a piece is inconsequential, so long as the artistic intent is clear.

New music does not need to sound good. Pleasurable sounds are merely one kind of sound one can use is a piece. Ugly sounds are just as legitimate.

New music does not need to be enjoyed. The goal is not to please an audience, but rather ones own intellect.

New music does not need melody. Melody is merely a succession of notes with certain rhythmic values. There is no intangible element that goes into the writing of a melody, and therefore, no one is born with a melodic gift.

New music does not need harmony. The harmonic language that is present can be entirely random, decided only by the coincidental of overlapping of lines.

New music is all craft. With practice, anyone can become a great composer.

New music does not need to be written clearly. The score is often as sacred as the sounds of the piece itself, and it often tries to reinvent the musical language.

New music does not need musical intention. Intellectual intention is all that is required. Any inherent qualities of sound are culturally learned. From centuries of consistent use, certain sounds have had particular emotional significances attributed to them.

New music does not need to be music.
