[edit] Analog switchoff

According to [1], and I quote, "Trevor Mallard announced a definitive time-frame for analog TV to be switched off: 2012, or on an accelerated schedule if digital TV penetration reaches 75% of households ahead of that date." Someone needs to update the article (don't ask me, I'm new).Ubergeek85 (talk) 20:27, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Maximum channels

Under channels, it says that we will see more channels under UHF than satellite. However, I have read/seen somewhere on a TVNZ programme such as One News or Breakfast, that the terrestrial service only supports up to 18 channels. --Danj205 12:25, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

I have also seen that program, but according to [2] "The satellite platform will provide a core set of programmes to those outside the DTT coverage footprint". Also, the CBA [3] also assumes that there will be more channels. However, the picture is still blurry, so you may be right. WP 01:07, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Watch this space

Currently, Sky controls signals to your decoder, which means they can turn it off if you don't pay the bill. It also means the decoder is of no use to anyone else so they aren't a popular item with burglars. The FreeView signal to the FreeView box will not be able to be controlled by FreeView (same as current free to air TV) so we are going to have a brand new very attractive item for burglars. Watch this space. Just thinking out loud is all. Moriori 03:01, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Continuing your thinking out loud: If the FreeView box isn't to be controlled by anybody, it does not need to include any kind of decryption, just decoding. Technichally, that is not too complicated, which means the box is cheap to make. Set top boxes for DVB-T, without card readers or decryption, are sold in other countries for as little as 60 NZD. That's not quite enough to be a 'very attractive item'. /Kriko 16:00, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Speculation

Stuff I found while researching the article. May or may not be reliable:

  • DVB-T in Wellington before 2007
  • More DVB-T channels in Auckland before 2007
  • initial DVB-T sites:
    • Waiatarua - Auckland
    • Te Aroha - Waikato / Hamilton
    • Wharite - Manawatu / Palmerston North
    • Mt Kau Kau - Wellington
    • Sugarloaf - Christchurch
    • Mt Cargill - Dunedin
    • Hedgehope - Invercargill
    • Mt Erin - Napier / Hastings
    • Mt Egmont - New Plymouth / Taranaki
    • Pine Hill - North Shore
  • MPEG2 for satellite, MPEG2/4 for terrestrial

Potential problems (from overseas experence):

  • Bad set top boxes (hang, crash, slow)
  • "interesting" programs like this
  • putting too many channels into one multiplex, resulting in poor quality

Yeah I have had problems with both Freeview boxes. The Zinwell & Hills. The Hills one is what I have now after returning my zinwell. The problems I find on them is the EPG doesn't want to load from time to time. Slow to load channels. And with the Hills box, if you letterbox TV3 the widescreen signal appears (white dotted line at the top left). Doublearon1 20:31, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

Hedgehope will not be in the first phase of DVB-T, expect it some time in 2009 Arjoll 11:09, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] GA Failing

Since one of the criteria for a GA article is to be stable, articles on future events cannot be promoted to GA status because of the updating content. Sorry, Highway Return to Oz... 16:20, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

how is that a 'possible' freeview logo Collaborate 08:03, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Yes. How can that be the possible FreeView logo, without any source specified? Not to mention, FreeView is only a temporary name, they plan to call it something else closer to launch. Danj205 20:47, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

it should probably be removed Collaborate 08:03, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Quality

This section doesn't seem to be right. TVNZ are still broadcasting in SDTV, but TVWorks (TV3 & C4) are now broadcasting in 16x9 widescreen. And 576 is a standard format and not widescreen. Doublearon1 20:28, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

576i is the vertical resolution. It doesn't matter whether a channel proadcasts in 4:3 or 16:9, it's still 576i. Laydan Mortensen 03:20, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
