The term was used to contrast the supposed greater freedom enjoyed by citizens of self-styled democratic countries, such as the United States and Western Europe, with the Soviet Union and its East European allies.

The expression "self-styled" is incorrect, because the Soviet Union and its satellite states claimed to be democratic too, so they were par excellence self-styled democratic countries. Boraczek 03:35, 10 Oct 2004 (UTC)

As nobody answered, I feel free to make changes in the article. Boraczek 12:13, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Self-styled is accurate. If you have anything to say about the Soviet Union, say it. Shorne 18:44, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Couldn't this article be shortened to just #REDIRECT [[United States of America]]? JIP | Talk 14:34, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

No, because the Free World encompasses ALL non-Communist nations. Read the article. However, the title should be capitalized as "Free World", as it appears in the article, not as "Free world". Canonblack 12:33, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
This term is still used - it hasn't died with the Cold War. Esn 16:17, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
