Freshwater cultured pearls

Freshwater cultured pearls are farmed in the freshwaters of China, Japan and the United States. The term cultured is used because they are induced by man not by nature. They are incorrectly called freshwater pearls by the majority of the world. The Federal Trade Commission guidelines state that pearls induced by human intervention must be labeled as cultured pearls, therefore, the correct terminology is freshwater cultured pearls. Please note that the FTC guidelines define cultured pearls typically as a shell bead nucleus seed. It is not always the case that a mollusk shell nucleus is implanted to create freshwater cultured pearls rather it is less likely the case. The alternative technique to shell bead nuclei is tissue grafting with various skill levels and pearl sac manipulations.
