The process factory is located in Quakertown Pennsylvania, which originally produced meatballs and burger patties for humans. [edit] Innovation

[edit] Refrigeration

Unlike most pet food on the market, Freshpet relies heavily on refrigeration. Compare to other dog food brand names on the market, Freshpet has the shortest expiration date (not including BARF Diet or Raw Diet). An unopened roll can usually last up to 14 weeks or by the use before date. Once opened, it must be used within a 7 to 10 days interval. Freshpet product must be refrigerated at all times.

[edit] Thermal Processing

The reason Freshpet product must be refrigerated at all times is due to how the products are processed. The meats in Freshpet products are not pre-processed, heat-treated or frozen and are cooked at 1/3 of the time as compared to dry and canned foods. This process makes Freshpet products more vulnerable to spoilage. However, the light pasteurization leaves in more natural flavor and more amino acid from the original meat.

[edit] Media Exposure

In the recent 2007 pet food recalls, panic struck the pet food industry. Being one of the few pet food companies not affected by the recall, Freshpet capitalized the opportunity and had its record high sale since it establishment in 2005. Newsweek released an article exploring the success of Freshpet.
