The Marion Dufresne is a research vessel maintained by the IPEV (Institut Polaire - Paul-Émile Victor) and TAAF, and named in honour of Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne. Designed as a multi-purpose research and resupply ship, she was launched in 1995.
The Marion Dufresne is designed to withstand rough seas. She is equipped with a device which allows her to retrieve sediments on the seafloor down to 60 metres deep, and a multi-beam sonar for cartography. She is also fitted with an operating theatre.
