On May 5, 1946, French voters were consulted in a referendum concerning the adoption of a permanent constitution for the Fourth Republic. Moderates, radicals, and the MRP campaigned against the referendum. Nearly 53% of voters rejected the constitution. Following the referendum, Charles de Gaulle was elected as the head of government of the Provisional Government of the French Republic.
