[edit] For those wondering why we have an article on an "amateur" astronomer

Frank Bateson was one of the last of the breed of amateur astronomers which was able to make the transition to professional work without a number of advanced degrees. He directed the VSS, which from what I can see is the world's premier research section for variable stars, for almost 80 years! He was a member or fellow of many astronomical societies worldwide and was considered by professional astronomers to have been an important pioneer. Google Scholar brings up over 50 hits on his name. He seems eminently notable to me, and I was a bit surprised we didn't have an article on him already. --Charlene 01:39, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
