[edit] George Town
From old accounts such as "Madras in the Olden Time" and "Memories of Madras", George Town was named so only in the early 1800s to honour George IV. The name prior to that was "Black Town", the first organised settlement of Indian traders and craftsmen as the old accounts characterise it, to contrast with "White Town", for the European settlers. It appears to be unlikely that Georgetown was leased for settlement along with the fort, since, according to the earliest accounts, the traders were forced to reside in the maidan outside the citadel, an area not leased to the British, and for whose inhabitants' security they could not be, therefore, held responsible.
