[edit] Premise
Franklyn follows four intertwining stories, three of which takes place in contemporary London and the fourth takes place in Meanwhile City, a parallel fantasy environment. In Meanwhile City, atheist vigilante Jonathan Preest (Phillippe) fights against the various religious presences. Ultimately, his path crosses with three others (Eva Green, Sam Riley, Bernard Hill) from London.[1]
[edit] Cast
- Ryan Phillippe as Jonathan Preest, a masked vigilante detective from Meanwhile City.[1]
- Eva Green as Emilia,[1] a schizophrenic woman.[2] One personality is a tormented artist, which Green has compared to real-life figures Sophie Calle and Tracey Emin,[3] and Green described the other personality as "full of life, very witty, big sense of humor".[2]
- Sam Riley as Milo, a young man who had been left at the altar at his wedding.[1] Riley was cast based on his performance as Ian Curtis in the 2007 film Control.[4]
- Bernard Hill as Peter, a Cambridge church warden who looks for his homeless son.[1]
Also cast in Franklyn are Susannah York, Art Malik,[5] and Richard Coyle.[6]
[edit] Production
Writer-director Gerald McMorrow wrote the original science fiction script Franklyn for his feature film debut. In October 2006, actor Ewan McGregor was cast into the lead role of the film, which was slated to begin production in summer 2007.[7] Production did not take place as planned, and McGregor left the project. Actors Ryan Phillippe, Eva Green, and newcomer Sam Riley were cast into Franklyn in September 2007.[4] Franklyn, which will have a budget of £6 million, of which £1 million will be provided by the UK Film Council through its Premiere Fund. Production began on September 24, 2007 in and around London.[5] Filming completed by December 2007.[3] By April 2008, the film had entered post-production.[8]
[edit] Release
Franklyn is scheduled to be released in 2008.[1] Purchasing rights from sales and financier HanWay Films, Contender Films will distribute the film in the United Kingdom, and Seville Pictures will distribute the film in Canada. Both distributors operate under their parent company, Entertainment One.[8]
