Franco Ballerini is a retired Italian road racing cyclist born on December 11, 1964 in Florence. His greatest exploits as a rider came with his two victories in the cycling classic Paris-Roubaix, riding for the Mapei cycling team. In 1993 he was beaten on the line by Gilbert Duclos-Lassalle in what was arguably the most exciting Paris-Roubaix finale ever. On his palmarès, there are also other one-day races such as Omloop Het Volk and Paris-Brussels.
Ballerini also works as the manager of the national Italian cycling squad, winning the the 2002 World Championhsips with Mario Cipollini and the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens with ex-teammate Paolo Bettini. In 2006 he triumphed for the second time at the World Championships when Bettini crowned himself World Champion.
