[edit] Description

Description
English: Depicts the scene at Holker Hall, in 1663, when the oath was tendered to George Fox by the justices of the neighbourhood. This work was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1864, and won for the artist the gold metal for historical painting. The idea and commission for the picture were given in 1863 by the late Mr. John Stewart, and we are informed that Mr. Pettie was at the greatest pain to secure the correctness of the costumes and details. George Fox is the prominent figure, Margaret Fell is sitting. The justice at the end, stretching out his hand, is Justice Rawlinson. (Whitten, p. 7-8)

Le tableau a été fait à la demande de John Stewart en 1863, l'auteur aurait pris le plus grand soin pour s'assurer de la justesse des habits et des détails.
