Forum Nokia

Forum Nokia is a support program for mobile application developers working on devices manufactured by Nokia. The term collectively refers to both the support organization within Nokia Corporation and the individuals and companies supported by the organization.

The most visible parts of Forum Nokia are its Web site and its online newsletters that discuss trends in and examples of mobile application development. Any developer or other visitor can read the material hosted on the website.

Forum Nokia is the primary means of distributing tools for Nokia platforms and devices. Most SDKs are available for download from their tools section after members have registered.

Forum Nokia also develops and distributes the Carbide.c++ brand of Integrated Development Environments for three different levels of c++ developers. All of them are based on the Eclipse IDE that supports Symbian OS development on the S60 platform, the Series 80 platform, UIQ, and the Mobile Oriented Applications Platform (MOAP). The Express version is for entry-level developers, the Developer Edition includes a UI designer to help develop GUI interfaces, and Professional Edition supports prototype devices. Each of the tools are distributed electronically from their tools section.

The Forum Nokia Web site also provides interactive support for developers needing technical help. Support elements include discussion boards, a type of Internet Forum. The Forum Nokia discussion boards allow any registered Forum Nokia member to pose questions; answers are provided by other Forum Nokia Developers and by professional members of the Forum Nokia staff.

Interactive support also include the Forum Nokia Wiki where members share source code and development process information.

The Forum Nokia web site also includes blogs written by Forum Nokia community members and professional staff.

Anyone who registers with the Forum Nokia web site is considered a member of the Forum Nokia community. Only community members may download tools or participate in interactive support.

Forum Nokia Champions are individuals within the Forum Nokia Community who are nominated by their peers for outstanding expertise and service. A list of current Champions is updated periodically.

[edit] Forum Nokia PRO

Forum Nokia PROs are companies who are invited to participate and pay an annual fee in exchange for early access to development resources and information, and a dedicated business development manager from Forum Nokia. Within Forum Nokia PRO sub-categories called Zones are used to support speciality areas of mobile development, for example Enterprise Zone for developers working on business applications and the N-Gage zone for developers developing for the N-Gage game system. The Forum Nokia web site has a technical library, which includes technical solutions, FAQs and, known issues. Technical Solutions are comprised mainly of developer questions that have been answered by Forum Nokia Technical Support. The technical support cases have been generalized and published as technical solutions to serve other developers. The Known Issues section includes known issues in Nokia's platform implementation and adds known deviations that Nokia devices have when compared to the platform specifications. The Technical Library is published in three formats: online, CHM, and WebHelp.

The Technical Consultancy provides customized levels of service and support to developers and channel partners who need personalized help. It can help a developer overcome specific technical challenges through incident support. It can also help manage development projects from beginning to end, from architectural design to technology risk management, contractor sourcing, project management, and quality assurance. Training is also a component of the Technical Consultancy offering. Group training is available at many locations around the world, and customer-specific training is conducted onsite. Forum Nokia also offers a collection of eLearning material for distance learning needs.

Other components of Nokia's developer program include training programs, eLearning materials, and a variety of software distribution channels.

[edit] Platforms Supported by Forum Nokia

[edit] Series 40 Platform

The Series 40 Platform supports development using the Java programming language JME, as well as development using Flash Lite and content consumption using a mobile browser.

S60 platform built on Symbian OS supports development using c++, Flash Lite, Java programming language, and content consumption on a browser based on WebKit. A press release notes that over 100 million devices built on S60 platform have been shipped as of April 25, 2007.
